During an interview with Reuters that was reported on by Mediaite,<\/a> Trump talked about how parties in control of the White House historically lose seats in Congress in midterm elections. <\/p>\nTrump has expressed concern that he will be impeached a third time if Republicans lose control of the House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate to the Democrats this year. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s some deep psychological thing, but when you win the presidency, you don\u2019t win the midterms,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Trump then said that his administration had accomplished so much already that \u201cwhen you think of it, we shouldn\u2019t even have an election.\u201d<\/p>\n
The president caused controversy when he looked to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, which incumbent Trump lost to Democrat Joe Biden. <\/p>\n
One poster on X challenged every Republican to denounce the president\u2019s statement about not holding the 2026 midterms. <\/p>\n
Said another: \u201cIs nobody reading the article? This seems like a pretty massive red flag.\u201d<\/p>\n
Another X user said: \u201cHe is not joking.\u201d<\/p>\n
When asked about the comment, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said, \u201cThe president was simply joking.\u201d<\/p>\n
Trump in the interview also waved off as \u201cfake\u201d a Reuters\/Ipsos poll that found that most Americans don\u2019t support an American takeover of Greenland. <\/p>\n
The survey showed that just 4% of Americans support the idea of the U.S. taking control of the Arctic nation, which is a self-governing territory of the Kingdom of Denmark. <\/p>\n
Trump said that he trusts his own gut on issues like Greenland. <\/p>\n
\u201cA lot of times, you can\u2019t convince a voter,\u201d he said. \u201cYou have to just do what\u2019s right. And then a lot of the things I did were not really politically popular.
