{"id":102127,"date":"2026-01-16T11:01:06","date_gmt":"2026-01-16T11:01:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/102127\/"},"modified":"2026-01-16T11:01:06","modified_gmt":"2026-01-16T11:01:06","slug":"celebrating-250-years-of-americana-at-christies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/102127\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrating 250 years of Americana at Christie&#8217;s"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An iconic image of the Old West was captured in the very first sculpture from famed artist Frederick Remington: The Broncho Buster.<\/p>\n<p>Though his sculptures and paintings showed the American West to the world, Remington was born and raised in Upstate New York and later worked in New York City.<\/p>\n<p>What You Need To Know<\/p>\n<p>Christie&#8217;s has an exhibition celebrating Americana Week on display through Jan. 22, followed by a sale the next day<br \/>\n<br \/>The exhibit includes art, rare documents and objects from American history<br \/>\n<br \/>The exhibition is free and open to the public\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe moved to Brooklyn in the 1880s and he was doing illustrations for Harper\u2019s Weekly and Scribner\u2019s, both New York City-based publications and that\u2019s where his rise to fame took place,\u201d Quincie Dixon, head of sale for\u00a0American Art at Christie\u2019s, said.<\/p>\n<p>The work of Remington, Charles Russell \u2014 another famous Western artist \u2014 and others are part of the William I. Koch collection on display at Christie\u2019s in Midtown as part of Americana Week.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s an exhibition of all types of art and objects centered around America and its history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese will be up on display through the 22nd, and the sale, most importantly, will be here at Christie\u2019s on the 23rd,\u201d said Peter Klarnet, senior specialist for Americana, Books and Manuscripts at Christie\u2019s.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a lot to see before that, including a collection called We the People: America at 250 that includes the Gilbert Stuart portrait of George Washington thought to inspire the image on the dollar bill. It was once owned by another president, James Madison.<\/p>\n<p>There is also the only sketch made by artist Grant Wood of his famous painting American Gothic, drawn in pencil on the back of an envelope. Plus, a version of the Emancipation Proclamation signed by President Abraham Lincoln, and a broadside edition of the Declaration of Independence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis one is believed to have been published in Exeter, New Hampshire, in mid-July 1776,\u201d Klarnet said of the documents made to be read in public or tacked on walls to spread the word.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s also an item from 200 years later \u2014 April 1976 \u2014 the contract that founded Apple Computers, signed by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and product designer Ronald Wayne.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout two weeks later, Mr. Wayne got cold feet and sold his 10% share back to Jobs and Wozniak for approximately $800,\u201d Klarnet said.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a lot more, and all the rare treasures are on view for free.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of people don\u2019t know we are open to the public.
