{"id":103293,"date":"2026-01-17T14:15:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-17T14:15:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/103293\/"},"modified":"2026-01-17T14:15:08","modified_gmt":"2026-01-17T14:15:08","slug":"nyc-commission-on-racial-equity-giving-grants-to-select-community-groups-to-study-reparations-200000-boondoggle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/103293\/","title":{"rendered":"NYC Commission on Racial Equity giving grants to select community groups to study reparations: &#8216;$200,000 boondoggle&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New York\u00a0fought the war to end slavery, but NYC taxpayers\u00a0will be shelling out more than $200,000 for woke community groups\u00a0to talk about <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/06\/10\/nyc-council-bills-target-black-reparations-racist-monuments\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reparations.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The taxpayer dough will be steered to select organizations who\u2019ll collaborate with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/content\/core\/pages\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NYC Commission on Racial Equity<\/a> to develop \u201crecommendations for repair, collect truth testimony from New Yorkers, and work with researchers leading a NYC Study on Reparations,\u201d 160 years after the Civil War ended.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe launch of this application represents another major step in the fight for reparations here in New York City,\u201d gushed CORE Chair and Executive Director Linda Tigani Thursday in announcing the launch of the \u201ccity\u2019s first-ever government supported Reparations Community Organizing Network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCommunity must be at the table and be provided the necessary resources to ensure that reparations study and action is community-informed,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>New York\u00a0fought the war to end slavery, but NYC taxpayers\u00a0will be shelling more than $200,000 so woke community groups\u00a0to talk about reparations. NYC Commission on Racial Equity \/Facebook<\/p>\n<p>CORE\u2019s<a href=\"http:\/\/chrome-extension:\/\/efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj\/https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/assets\/core\/downloads\/pdf\/FY2026Nov_CORE%20NYC%20Truth%20Healing%20and%20Reconciliation%20Solicitation_AmendedFinal.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"> \u201csolicitation of interest\u201d <\/a>says it plans to award up to 13 nonprofits, community groups or minority- and women-owned businesses up to $17,500 \u2013 or $227,500 total.<\/p>\n<p>However, the CORE\u2019s press statement released Thursday said the award could actually reach $20,000 \u2014 or $260,000 combined. <\/p>\n<p>The commission refused to explain the discrepancy or answer other questions asked by The Post.<\/p>\n<p>The NYC Commission on Racial Equity said Thursday it will dish out grants to 13 community organizations who\u2019ll help participate in the reparations study. NYC Commission on Racial Equity \/Facebook<\/p>\n<p>Either way, as early as next month, prospective winners will begin to tackle such questions as \u201cHow do communities harmed by racism and social injustice \u2014 specifically descendants and survivors of chattel slavery, Jim Crow, and the legacy of slavery \u2014 define healing, truth, and reconciliation in NYC?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Critics were stunned at Gotham\u2019s latest woke scheme \u2014 which was even more astounding given New York was a free state by 1827, and was the first to abolish legal slavery.  <\/p>\n<p>More than 50,000 New Yorkers were killed fighting to end slavery in the Civil War \u2014 the greatest sacrifice of any state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe creation of this commission was already insulting enough to New Yorkers, who have nothing to do with slavery, but now it appears it\u2019s becoming a taxpayer-funded boondoggle for special interest groups and activists,\u201d NYC Council Minority Leader David Carr (R-Staten Island) said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>CORE Chairperson and Executive Director Linda Tigani (right) said \u201cthe launch of this application represents another major step in the fight for reparations here in New York City,\u201d  NYC Commission on Racial Equity\/Facebook<\/p>\n<p>Councilwoman Joann Ariola (R-Queens) also ripped the plan, saying \u201chow are we even gauging the criteria for eligibility on this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNew York banned slavery in 1827,\u201d she said. \u201cAre we going to do a genealogy search for only people who can trace their ancestry back to that time?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs the city going to pay for the descendants of anyone who was ever enslaved? If my Sicilian ancestors were enslaved in the Middle Ages, does that make me eligible for the study? This is truly ridiculous political theater, and a total waste of taxpayer money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe creation of this commission was already insulting enough to New Yorkers, who have nothing to do with slavery, but now it appears it\u2019s becoming a taxpayer funded boondoggle for special interest groups and activists,\u201d NYC Council Minority Leader David Carr (R-Staten Island) said.\u00a0 Paul Martinka<\/p>\n<p>Voters approved the creation of the CORE through a 2022 referendum, which was put on the ballot at a the request of a Racial Justice Commission appointed by former far-left Mayor Bill de Blasio in the wake of 2020 \u201cBlack Lives Matters\u201d protests against police brutality nationwide. <\/p>\n<p>The CORE\u2019s 15 commissioners <a href=\"http:\/\/chrome-extension:\/\/efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj\/https:\/\/council.nyc.gov\/budget\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/54\/2025\/03\/Commission-on-Racial-Equity-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">oversee a $4.8 million budget<\/a> and operate independently from city government. They serve three-year terms with the seats appointed by the mayor, City Council, public advocate and comptroller.<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Mamdani, who was sworn into office Jan. 1, has been a longtime proponent of the reparations movement.
