{"id":103929,"date":"2026-01-18T13:18:14","date_gmt":"2026-01-18T13:18:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/103929\/"},"modified":"2026-01-18T13:18:14","modified_gmt":"2026-01-18T13:18:14","slug":"deer-cull-on-fire-island-and-william-floyd-estate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/103929\/","title":{"rendered":"Deer cull on Fire Island and William Floyd Estate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An annual deer cull on Fire Island and at the William Floyd Estate in Mastic Beach will take place this month, the <a class=\"nd-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/index.htm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">National Park Service<\/a> said Friday in a news release.<\/p>\n<p>Specific dates were not disclosed for the cull, which has faced protests and lawsuits in recent years from animal welfare organizations.<\/p>\n<p>Federal authorities said the cull\u00a0is\u00a0needed to protect other species of wildlife and promote\u00a0&#8220;a balanced ecosystem.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;White-tailed deer damage plants and eat most native plant species. Having an overabundance of deer in these areas shrinks the size of our forested areas and prevents forest regeneration,&#8221; the release said.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"nd-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/fiis\/index.htm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fire Island National Seashore<\/a> officials did not respond to phone and email messages seeking comment. The agency supervises public areas of Fire Island and the <a class=\"nd-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/fiis\/planyourvisit\/williamfloydestate.htm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">William Floyd Estate<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Deer culls have taken place nearly annually <a class=\"nd-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newsday.com\/long-island\/suffolk\/deer-cull-fire-island-william-floyd-estate-ffwf32c6\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">since at least 2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This month&#8217;s cull will be carried out by &#8220;highly qualified wildlife professionals,&#8221; and public areas will be closed while it takes place, the park service&#8217;s release said.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, &#8220;trained firearm experts&#8221; were hired to kill deer, the park service&#8217;s website says, adding that the shooters discharge weapons from at least\u00a0500 feet from any homes.<\/p>\n<p>Venison from the culls is\u00a0typically donated to local food banks, parks officials have said.<\/p>\n<p>A total of\u00a098 deer were killed in 2024, the last year for which numbers are available\u00a0\u2014 45 deer at the\u00a0William Floyd Estate and 53 on other public lands on Fire Island, the National Park\u00a0Service website says.<\/p>\n<p>Culling opponents, such as D.J. Schubert, a senior wildlife biologist with Washington, D.C.-based Animal Welfare Institute, say there are better ways to thin the population than killing deer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are unalterably opposed to the ongoing culling program&#8221; on Fire Island, Schubert said Friday in a phone interview.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s entirely\u00a0unnecessary and there are nonlethal alternatives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Schubert said\u00a0park service officials for a time used immunocontraception, which deploys vaccines to block reproduction, to thin the deer herds.
