of snow has left its mark on Staten Island and as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/weather\/2026\/01\/heres-when-the-heaviest-snow-is-expected-in-nyc-according-to-meteorologist.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/weather\/2026\/01\/heres-when-the-heaviest-snow-is-expected-in-nyc-according-to-meteorologist.html\">the heaviest snowfall is expected from Sunday evening into Sunday night<\/a>, many are wondering when they should get out and shovel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6WF5N57ITRFWBMJYK6BVELCC4Q\">New York City requires property and business owners to clear <a href=\"https:\/\/dsny.cityofnewyork.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Snow_Storm_Prep.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/dsny.cityofnewyork.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Snow_Storm_Prep.pdf\">snow and ice off sidewalks and other pedestrian walkways to create a 4-foot-wide<\/a> path for passersby.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6H3ZEOKSIFF5ZKLTAF5RCVDSJE\">Snow and ice must also be cleared from around fire hydrants, catch basins and sidewalk ramps.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"Y57NDQKPLFEGBIBTX5AKLSY3XU\">According <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/site\/dsny\/what-we-do\/snow-response\/snow-laws.page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/site\/dsny\/what-we-do\/snow-response\/snow-laws.page\">to the Department of Sanitation<\/a>, which oversees the city\u2019s snow removal, the timing for when you must shovel depends on when the snowfall ends.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MY3RMS5BJRBBRAMGGISO2LYO5E\">If the snow ends between 7 a.m. and 4:59 p.m., then a path must be cleared within four hours.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"V5IJ5PSRIRCJLFDCA6UOWJMB2U\">If the snow stops falling between 5 p.m. and 8:59 p.m., however, then the snow must be cleared within 14 hours.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"EVJHZ2YNYJAKZGLVW7L7KK52UU\">Should the snow stop falling overnight, any time between 9 p.m. and 6:59 a.m., sidewalks must be cleared by 11 a.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MUIMFQADDZAUNFCSFHAU2I7BGE\">Finally, Sanitation warns that if the snow stops by 7 p.m., building owners or occupants need to clear a path in the snow or salt the sidewalk by 9 a.m. the next morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"T7FWP52Z2ZBJFMGYXWDTHKONNI\">If the sidewalks haven\u2019t been cleared by then, Sanitation can issue summonses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"N4UWJLL26VFYVNPZHP7PDW665I\">Fines for an initial summons for failing to shovel are from $100 to $150 and for every summons thereafter, between $150 and $350, according <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/assets\/mopd\/downloads\/pdf\/Snow-Removal-2020.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/assets\/mopd\/downloads\/pdf\/Snow-Removal-2020.pdf\">to a city information sheet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3F6CKO7KHNH3FHIYY5R5LPQ3UM\">Sanitation also stresses that snow should not be pushed, blown or shoveled into the streets. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.
