The strike began on Monday, Jan. 12, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/day-1-nurses-at-three-nyc-private-hospital-systems-strike-as-gov-hochul-declares-state-of-emergency\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a>, following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/update-new-york-private-hospitals-poised-for-potential-strike-action-by-nys-nurses-association\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">failed prior negotiations<\/a> between the parties. [Read our previous coverage by clicking on the previous links, and read our Day 2 story <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/update-15000-nurses-continue-day-2-of-their-strike-action-against-three-private-hospitals\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>, Day 3 and 4 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/elected-officials-join-nurses-on-picket-line-on-day-3-and-4-of-nurses-strike\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>, and Day 5 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/student-supports-nurses-on-day-5-of-strike-the-nurses-took-care-of-me-ill-never-forget-that\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nurses at Mount Sinai and New York Presbyterian private hospital systems, who are also members of New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA) union, are also striking, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/update-new-york-private-hospitals-poised-for-potential-strike-action-by-nys-nurses-association\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a>, in the largest nurses\u2019 strike in New York City history.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to NYSNA, on Thursday and Friday, nurses met with New York-Presbyterian, Mount Sinai, and Mount Sinai Morningside and West. \u201cAfter days of weathering the cold on strike, nurses came to the bargaining tables ready to get some real work done,\u201d a spokesperson for the NYSNA said.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>NYSNA officials allege the hospitals had characterized the nurses\u2019 demands as unreasonable. In response, they said if people thought maintaining healthcare benefits for the union\u2019s healthcare workers, providing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2026\/01\/16\/the-real-reason-behind-new-yorks-nurses-strike\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2026\/01\/16\/the-real-reason-behind-new-yorks-nurses-strike\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1768787830384000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0rIp23-k9jBZj29-2WpE9t\">enough staff<\/a>\u00a0so that patients can be safely cared for,\u00a0and\u00a0providing protections against\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/documentedny.com\/2026\/01\/08\/workplace-violence-new-york-nurses-strike\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/documentedny.com\/2026\/01\/08\/workplace-violence-new-york-nurses-strike\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1768787830384000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2TPk89gLTr35A8sifL3mkt\">workplace<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/01\/16\/nyregion\/nyc-nurses-strike-negotiations-safety.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/01\/16\/nyregion\/nyc-nurses-strike-negotiations-safety.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1768787830385000&amp;usg=AOvVaw36ASefR7QBi_D6rUTIeD-y\">violenc<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/01\/16\/nyregion\/nyc-nurses-strike-negotiations-safety.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/01\/16\/nyregion\/nyc-nurses-strike-negotiations-safety.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1768787830385000&amp;usg=AOvVaw36ASefR7QBi_D6rUTIeD-y\">e<\/a> was unreasonable, then they were not sure they were being unreasonable. Other nurses are seen here on the picket line under snowfall.\u00a0<br \/>Photo courtesy of Jarrett Murphy<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">NYSNA went on to say that what they believe is unreasonable is paying CEOs $26.3 million, referencing Steve Corwin, CEO of New York Presbyterian, who, according to the hospital, is due to step down from his role this month. They also referenced CEO of Montefiore, Dr. Philip Ozuah, alleging his pay increased to $16.7 million in 2024. The union added that it has made significant revisions to its proposals at the bargaining table and allege they were \u201cpresented with nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The union further alleged the hospitals were \u201cfurious\u201d about the safe staffing standards nurses won <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/nurses-strike-against-montefiore-and-mount-sinai-ends-after-three-days-as-deal-is-struck\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">three years ago<\/a>\u00a0and \u201cwere willing to do anything <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/14\/nyregion\/nurses-unions-new-york-presbyterian-hospital-supreme-court.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/14\/nyregion\/nurses-unions-new-york-presbyterian-hospital-supreme-court.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1768787830385000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1ZkBhi0q0TNmPXLPZDDJtJ\">to\u00a0claw\u00a0them back<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>NYSNA\u2019s main demands are outlined in our previous stories. The main one appears to be the patient \/ nurse ratio. Montefiore and other hospitals had responded to this and the nurses\u2019 other concerns in our previous stories <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/update-new-york-private-hospitals-poised-for-potential-strike-action-by-nys-nurses-association\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/day-1-nurses-at-three-nyc-private-hospital-systems-strike-as-gov-hochul-declares-state-of-emergency\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>. Norwood News has since reached out to Montefiore again for an update on the latest comments by NYSNA on the apparent deadlock and will share any feedback we receive. A spokesperson acknowledged our request and we will share any further updates we receive.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, some of the nurses at Mount Sinai in Manhattan completed a 12-hour relay run on the picket-line around one of the hospitals, logging over 30 runners, 333 laps, and 147 miles, most of it in a windy 35 degrees, according to Jarrett Murphy, a pediatric ER nurse. \u201cThe big takeaway: Ain\u2019t nobody gonna outlast the nurses,\u201d Murphy said in part. \u201cWe usually race around for 12 hours helping patients. Gustavo Rivera (S.D. 33), chair of the NYS senate health committee, local Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz (A.D. 81), local City Councilman Eric Dinowitz (C.D. 11), State Sen.
