New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA)<\/a>, the union representing the nearly 15,000 striking nurses, met with\u00a0NewYork-Presbyterian and Mount Sinai Morningside and\u00a0West, two of the three hospitals involved in the strike, in addition to Montefiore, to negotiate their demands with management.<\/p>\nBut the talks stalled yet again, putting the nurses back on the picket line throughout the Martin Luther King, Jr., holiday weekend, as management returned to their offices.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The nurses said they made \u201csignificant revisions\u201d to their proposals at the bargaining table, but their bosses offered \u201cnothing\u201d in return.\n<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat we are demanding, we believe, is essential to providing care to New Yorkers,\u201d NYSNA said in a statement. \u201cIt seems hospitals\u00a0are furious about the safe staffing standards\u00a0that\u00a0nurses won three years ago\u00a0and are willing to do\u00a0anything\u00a0to\u00a0claw\u00a0them back.\u00a0What will it take for the\u00a0city\u2019s wealthiest hospitals to start listening to nurses, patients, and the public?\u00a0<\/p>\n
Hospital management at both NewYork Prebyterian and Mount Sinai hospitals called the nurses\u2019 demands \u201cunreasonable.\u201d\n<\/p>\n
\u201cThe union\u2019s proposals remain unreasonable,\u201d NewYork-Presbyterian said in a statement. \u201cWhile we continue to be far apart, we are committed to bargaining in good faith. Future meetings will be scheduled through the mediator.\u201d<\/p>\n
According to NewYork-Presbyterian, its nurses are among the highest paid in the city, with an average annual compensation of $163,000, and an average total comp of approximately $233,000 including fringe benefits.\u00a0Hospital executives said the nurses have asked for an approximate 25% wage increase, which they said would amount to a more than\u00a0$2 billion\u00a0incremental increase over the next three years.\u00a0<\/p>\n
At Mount Sinai, the union put on the table a raise in average nurse pay to nearly $250,000 before factoring in benefits, a hospital spokesperson said.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
The nurses, meanwhile, called out the \u201cunreasonable\u201d salaries of executives in charge of the hospital systems.\n<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat we believe is unreasonable is paying your CEOs\u00a0$26.3\u00a0million, we\u2019re\u00a0looking at you, Steve Corwin,\u00a0 or\u00a0doubling your CEO\u00a0compensation,\u201d NYSNA said in a statement. \u201cMontefiore\u2019s CEO De.\u00a0Ozuah\u00a0doubled his between 2020 to 2023, taking his pay to $16.7 in 2024, while refusing to safely staff.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
AOC support on the picket lines<\/p>\n
Local politicians and unions have come out in full force to support the picketing nurses outside their respective hospitals.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, who represents parts of the Bronx and Queens, gave her support to the nurses at Montefiore in the Bronx on Friday. She also zeroed in on hospital safety.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThese hospitals, in an attempt to make more money, don\u2019t want to hire nurses at a safe patient-to-nurse staffing ratio,\u201d the Congress members said. And they also aren\u2019t implementing a very important standard to also make sure nurses are safe in the hospitals, as well.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Attorney General Letitia James, Public Advocate Jumaane Williams and a slate of unions gave their support to the nurses since the strike began on Jan. 12.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, all three hospitals, including their emergency departments,\u00a0 are open and providing care with support from temp nurses and the NYS Department of Health.\u00a0<\/p>\n
