STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — After easily disposing of league opponents New Dorp (82-18), Graphics Campus (80-26) and Stuyvesant (86-30) on consecutive days during the week, Tottenville met Thurgood Marshall Saturday in a battle of PSAL 4A unbeaten teams at home<\/p>\n
As it turned out, the final score of that game turned out to be lopsided, too, as the Pirates ran away with an 83-51 victory over their Manhattan opponent.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe came into this game knowing this would probably be one of our toughest PSAL games so far,\u201d said Tottenville head coach Jessica Althoff, whose club improved to 12-0 in the league. \u201cThey were quick and rebounded the ball well. It was a real group effort. I had five players with double digits, and they played a very unselfish game, which as a coach that\u2019s all you really want. When my team comes together and we work as one, we are going to be hard to beat.\u201d<\/p>\n
Senior guard Araya Lichtman led all scorers with 24 points. She added four assists and four steals. Brianna Ardolic (16 points and seven rebounds), Gabriella Ortiz (14 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals), Grace Anderson (12 points, six assists and six steals) and Kayla Souliedis (11 points and seven rebounds) were also instrumental in the win.<\/p>\n
\u201cGrace saw that Araya was hot and she just kept feeding her the ball,\u201d said Althoff. \u201cVery unselfish game and really did a nice job looking down the court on the fast breaks for our runners.\u201d<\/p>\n
Thurgood fell to 11-1 in the league. <\/p>\n
\u201cThis was the type of team, though even when your winning you feel like the tempo of the game was fast and physical, the girls had to play physical for 32 straight minutes and that\u2019s exactly what they did,\u201d the Pirate coach said. \u201cI\u2019m proud of them; this was a great win for us. We came into the week playing three straight games, so I was hoping the girls weren\u2019t tired but they brought the energy.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Pirates may have run out of steam Sunday morning in the Rose Classic Showcase in Broooklyn as they suffered an 83-51 defeat to South Colonie HS, 83-51, from upstate.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey were quick and ran the floor like no one we have versed this season and our legs were just dead,\u201d said Althoff, whose team will play Monday against Brooklyn Law and Tech in the MLK Showcase.<\/p>\n
The Pirates are 15-3 overall.<\/p>\n
