{"id":105117,"date":"2026-01-19T22:07:09","date_gmt":"2026-01-19T22:07:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/105117\/"},"modified":"2026-01-19T22:07:09","modified_gmt":"2026-01-19T22:07:09","slug":"staten-island-honors-martin-luther-king-jr-with-annual-fellowship-brunch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/105117\/","title":{"rendered":"Staten Island honors Martin Luther King Jr. with annual fellowship brunch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"JSNZ5GHV2BHW5I3AHCUJX62GLE\">STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 Community members gathered Monday at the Central Family Life Center for the third annual Martin Luther King Jr. Fellowship Brunch to reflect on the Civil Rights leader\u2019s legacy and commitment to service.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6OHIDYOXK5DNPADVKZANSSORJE\">The annual fellowship brunch, created by the Staten Island Black Heritage organization, brought together elected officials, faith leaders and civic organizations. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7N4FCWJMSNA3BH7BGZJRVTBRIA\">Minnie Graham, co-founder of the organization and event host, said the brunch was created in response to a lack of Staten Island\u2013based events honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Staten Island MLK Day 2026: Community gathers for annual Fellowship Brunch\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/6T5NU4RSIRB4ZBZAQZQADX6KCI.JPG\"  \/>Minnie Graham, co-founder of Staten Island Black Heritage organization and event host pictured with  Rev. Moore at the third annual MLK Fellowship Brunch on Monday at Central Family Life Center in West Brighton.Sydney Maldonado<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XRGM72OZTREVBGY52HRRR3KQPU\">Graham said the fellowship brunch serves as a recommitment to improving conditions in the community by encouraging unity, understanding and continued action, specifically within the borough\u2019s Black community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"Y7GVY5HR5BA6JCTSSK27CVFLFA\">Attendees included members of the Harriet Tubman Purple Hat Society, First Central Baptist Church, Fellowship Baptist Church, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and other local organizations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7OD6WJRDFVGMBEVQPTR4WK5EWI\">The brunch opened with a prayer from Bishop Donnie Williams of Reach Out and Touch Ministries, followed by a blessing over the food from Rev. Dale Smith of First Baptist Church<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VE2TO2ES4FCB3FM44UPP6WBUPI\">After the meal, keynote speaker Rev. Daryl D. Moore, a Staten Island native and pastor of First Central Baptist Church, reflected on his childhood experiences at MLK Day events at his church and the importance of turning remembrance into action. <\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Keynote speaker Rev. Moore speaking at the third annual MLK Fellowship Brunch on Monday at Central Family Life Center in West Brighton.Sydney Maldonado<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"44D42RZ4KBHIRKFSDEJPO5UFSM\">Moore connected Dr. King\u2019s fight for fair wages and support for workers to ongoing economic challenges in Staten Island, including poverty and cuts to programs like Medicaid, SNAP and the child tax credit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"S5U7UOQSQBARHC2VSJZELEGJI4\"> \u201cThe reason why we have days like this is so that we can remember the moment and also understand the movement,\u201d Moore said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6L67G74BV5HIVH5GB65RIQCO7I\">He urged attendees to carry the work forward beyond the event: \u201cIf you do nothing, what you do is say that this is only a moment and not a movement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"D4OCYAQSQNBSJLXLPWZOA7ALWI\">Moore said King\u2019s legacy is deeply personal to him, recalling that his first public speech as a teenager at church was about carrying on King\u2019s work. Now, speaking at the brunch, he called it a \u201cfull circle\u201d moment. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XDWH2TDZLFEFPOSKNNZMFUVKBQ\">He noted similarities between himself and King, including graduating school early and entering ministry. \u201cSince I\u2019m a preacher, Martin Luther King Jr. is one of the few that means something to me because I feel like I\u2019m in the lineage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7LO4SAIAWRGKFHVV6IIC4QDX2Y\">Following Moore\u2019s speech, Dr. Demetrius Carolina Sr. of First Central Baptist Church reflected on the importance of taking action in life and making a difference, echoing Moore\u2019s message. Dale Smith of First Baptist Church at the third annual MLK Fellowship Brunch at Central Family Life Center on Monday in West Brighton.Sydney Maldonado<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6IAQNC3KURH35A4EB3XUEAWJLY\">Beyond the program, Graham shared her thoughts on King\u2019s legacy and the ongoing work of the fellowship brunch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CIADUITECZH6RN37EOI3A7AYPI\">She said King was \u201ccommitted to the improvement of not just Black people but the overall society\u201d and fought for humanity, dignity and respect. She added that King\u2019s example taught her that \u201cthe struggle continues and you don\u2019t just give up.
