JJ Yates (three treys) added 13 points while Matt Scalisi and Mike Abreu teamed for another 15 markers for Farrell.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TUGL54TFBBFRNK3O3GURAEXMW4\">The Lions nearly upset the first-place Red Storm (15-2 overall) during the first game out of the break a few weeks back. But the Queens school, which received offensive contributions from Daquan Bryant (15 points) and Richard Fernandez (10 points) on Monday, stormed back to squeeze out a 60-57 win.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"45I63MHDE5ADPNT4NYMAFN6U6U\">Farrell, however, got the last laugh this time around. The Lions trailed late, but did everything right in the waning minutes to hand SJP its first league loss (10-1). <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HXM5FMOKG5GKPJIUJDNKHQWWY4\">\u201cWe knew if we did things right we could knock them off and we did enough today to do it,\u2019&#8217; said Farrell head coach Danny Fisher, whose team buried each of its six free-throw attempts. \u201dI\u2019m proud of everyone in the locker room for that. However, we know we need to continue to get better if we want to accomplish our goals of winning a championship and our guys are up for the challenge.\u2019&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ORPMOONQQBBQVLLBTUNFJ4W6VA\">St. John\u2019s carried a 34-33 lead into the fourth quarter and held a lead several times down the stretch, but each time the Lions stormed back.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IYRGXPYQMZBEFEFMAGTQYLU4GQ\">The lefty-shooting Yates tied the score at 38-38 with a trey out of a time out. Then, with the Lions trailing 42-38, the three-year varsity player buried another triple off a baseline out-of-bounds play to get Farrell within a point with 2:22 left.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LMRCWTVC3VHRDH43UUNMYOCPKA\">\u201cJJ has the green light and his teammates do a great job finding him,\u2019&#8217; praised Fisher. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IR3AJILRGVAYPH65INAM7XXMCM\">Farrell still trailed by a single point with time winding down when Hanley got fouled driving to the rim with just 14 ticks left. The big man sank both free throws to give the Lions a 43-42 lead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VCPBVZRNT5AATDB3G4GGEAZBZY\">\u201cRyan is working hard on becoming a multi-level scorer and you could see it this past week,\u2019&#8217; said Fisher of Hanley. \u201dHe is scoring in the post, facing up and attacking and even knocking down threes. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OW7TGYC5ORGDXI7GGEYWSJLJWA\">\u201cWhen he plays within himself, he is one of the best bigs in the league.\u2019&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"27D5MZYQWVBBZKQHSBSRQDPSTY\">SJP looked to regain the lead in the waning seconds, but missed a shot and Abreu (13 rebounds, six offensive) grabbed the rebound and drew a foul. The junior calmly sank both freebies to up Farrell\u2019s lead to three.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"I5MEAYTOUFDTDBQVSCY3A63BFU\">\u201cI\u2019m proud of how we executed in the big spots today,\u2019&#8217; said Fisher. \u201dAnd that was on both sides of the ball \u2014 it shows our growth and maturity.\u2019&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ORVV2XG27NAZZBK6FCO46LLF3I\">Xavier 61, Moore 44<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"V2WSU6VBCVCN5BQGHMAMQADRIM\">MANHATTAN \u2014 The Mavericks found themselves behind the eight-ball early and never recovered as they dropped the CHSAA A decision to the host Knights on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3TS65TC225GZXNW2ZUCWZBJAY4\">Senior guard Nick DeGrado finished with 15 points while Eenej Vinson and Matt Mieles combined for another 15 markers for Moore, which dropped to 3-10 overall (2-8 CHSAA).<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4LJS455ZWJGW3D5GCTZPA7UKWM\">Peter Franchock and Aleksandar Kovacevic finished with 18 and 16 points, respectively, for Xavier (8-7 overall, 5-7 league). Franchock, who was 3 for 3 from the line, had a three-pointer and one conventional three-point play..<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6AFXPVU6NBE5FOW27XW54QUDAM\">The Knights led 14-8 after one period. Franchock tallied seven points and Kovacevic added six in the second quarter as the Manhattan school built a 30-20 advantage at intermission and never looked back.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KUSRSPK5DNG75N4HVMNUYTCESE\">Pace 56, MSIT 42<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TOC4DNS3IJGNLOK5OSCM7763CQ\">BROOKLYN, N.Y. \u2014 The Seagulls owned a one-point lead at halftime, but the Setters turned in a big second half to capture the MLK Classic contest at St. Thomas Aquinas on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3RMX5PZ7SBATRB44UITPWMUWHY\">Ray Guerriero led the way for MSIT with 15 points.
