{"id":107709,"date":"2026-01-21T21:25:10","date_gmt":"2026-01-21T21:25:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/107709\/"},"modified":"2026-01-21T21:25:10","modified_gmt":"2026-01-21T21:25:10","slug":"n-y-weather-snowfall-total-in-nyc-depends-on-this-crucial-factor-says-weather-expert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/107709\/","title":{"rendered":"N.Y. weather: Snowfall total in NYC depends on this crucial factor, says weather expert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WVXZOFR27ZA73BIO2HZ4F7YHGI\">STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 Snow is expected to impact New York City this weekend, but just how much remains up in the air.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KCQ2AMJFH5E7BDOTZH3XMAKORA\">According to Tom Kines, a senior meteorologist with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accuweather.com\/#google_vignette\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.accuweather.com\/#google_vignette\">AccuWeather<\/a>, the city is forecast to receive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/weather\/2026\/01\/ny-weather-6-inches-or-a-foot-uncertainty-over-nyc-snowfall-forecast-for-weekend-storm.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/weather\/2026\/01\/ny-weather-6-inches-or-a-foot-uncertainty-over-nyc-snowfall-forecast-for-weekend-storm.html\">a general accumulation between 6 and 12 inches<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KPTRYTNVRVGVFP5G6GMSQEYO5M\">However, ultimate snowfall tallies will be determined by just how far north this storm system shifts in the days ahead, he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PD2ZIGUIAJCPJFNZGXTRGMF2YY\">As of Wednesday morning, an area of high pressure persists over the Northeast and it\u2019s that force which could keep the storm at bay. Yet if the projected storm strengthens and manages to overwhelm the high pressure area, then the snowfall estimates for the city could increase.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FLIGGOZODZASRCUQXJC7WVGYTY\">\u201cIt\u2019s going to be a battle to see who wins out. If the high pressure wins out, there will be less in the way of snow,\u201d Kines noted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"U36BMZKBIZCLTFZXUUZZX4A4FU\">\u201cIf the southern storm gets stronger and pushes the high pressure area out of the way, that\u2019s how the storm gets farther north and we get a very significant snowfall,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"NWS snowfall forecast\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/UVXMASW2VZDMNITY3SV26VX5FE.png\"  \/>This National Weather Service graphic shows there is a 75% probability that Staten Island will receive at least six inches of snow from Sunday, Jan. 25, through Monday, Jan. 26, 2026.(National Weather Service)<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QZZCYMEIRNFRZLGCN334JHS5GQ\">Should the storm maintain its course, Kines believes the forecast precipitation will be \u201cdry, fluffy snow\u201d that is easier to shovel. If, however, the storm effectively pushes further north, it will bring warmer air and the potential for sleet or freezing rain. This wetter snow could prove to be a real hassle for residents attempting to clear their sidewalks and dig out vehicles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BF56NC6HZFBZDJDDRB6I26X2OU\">\u201cWhether it\u2019s 6 inches or 10 inches, it\u2019s going to be impactful. People are going to be shoveling, snow crews will be plowing and it\u2019s going to be a mess,\u201d Kines said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5BW64EX4UBGLNCHDHYCHHDCNDU\">As the forecast stands Wednesday morning, much of the heavier snow will come down in the southern part of the city, including Staten Island.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SVNNDLQH6RBKVMVX2MNVKRJA5U\">While the Island is expected to see some more snow, that does not mean areas upstate New York will be spared. According to Kines, the snowfall is forecast to extend from Albany on south.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GBZSPBEN65CCBNPCDVRY4ZPMAY\">The storm is forecast to arrive sometime between late Saturday night and Sunday morning and will persist throughout the day Sunday before tapering off Monday morning, according to Kines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ACGS4FV6BFHAPHLJ4FPLHUEELQ\">Temperatures on Sunday are not expected to exceed 20 degrees and Monday\u2019s highs will likely reach the mid-20s, said Kines.
