A Bronx basketball coach and gym teacher is under arrest and charged with raping one of his students.<\/p>\n
Jayvone Johnson, 34, previously taught gym and coached basketball at Icahn Charter School 2 in the Bronx.<\/p>\n
He is charged with raping a 14-year-old female student on Dec. 23, 2024.<\/p>\n
According to court documents, he took the 14-year-old to a motel in the Bronx called Jet Set Hotel. Police said it was there at 3 p.m. after school that he allegedly committed the crime.<\/p>\n
Johnson was arrested last month and charged with rape, sexual misconduct, sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child.<\/p>\n
He was released on his own recognizance.<\/p>\n
Johnson is no longer employed by the school.<\/p>\n
“This is a very reputable school and I’ve always felt that my child is safe here, but as you know, you can’t always tell who is coming in, but I am glad that they immediately dismissed him and they took appropriate action,” said parent Andre Weekes.<\/p>\n
The NYPD released his picture to encourage other possible victims to come forward.<\/p>\n
Police are asking any other victims to calling the NYPD’s Sex Crimes Hotline at 1-212-267-RAPE (7273), the Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782).<\/p>\n
Eyewitness News reached out to the Bronx District Attorney’s Office and the charter school but we are still waiting to hear back.<\/p>\n
