STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 Just when you finished shoveling and your driveway started looking respectable again, forecasters have begun tracking a more significant snowstorm expected to roll into the area this weekend.<\/p>\n
Staten Island and the surrounding New York City area should prepare for a winter storm expected to bring 6 inches of snow or more <\/a>Sunday, accompanied by dangerous wind chills and arctic temperatures that will persist into early next week, according to National Weather Service<\/a> meteorologist Rich Bann.<\/p>\n Saturday into Saturday night is expected to remain relatively calm. After midnight, snow becomes much more likely. However, any accumulation during this early phase will be minimal. <\/p>\n \u201cDespite having snow in the area, we\u2019re looking at maybe little to no accumulation,\u201d Bann noted.<\/p>\n The main event is expected Sunday as a weather system moving up from the Plains reaches the East Coast. The combination of a cold air mass over land and relatively warm water will create conditions that bring a 90% to 100% chance of snow to the area. <\/p>\n \u201cBased on some of the guidance I\u2019m seeing, there\u2019s a pretty good chance that you\u2019re going to be looking at 6 or more inches of snow,\u201d Bann said.<\/p>\n Sunday\u2019s high is expected to reach only 20 to 25 degrees, with wind chills dropping to around zero. Winds will be strong enough to cause blowing and drifting snow, though conditions won\u2019t reach classic nor\u2019easter levels.<\/p>\n Snow will continue into Monday before tapering off late Monday morning or early afternoon. Monday\u2019s high temperature will again reach only around 25 degrees.<\/p>\n Behind the storm, bitter cold air from Canada will settle over the region. By Monday night, low temperatures in downtown Manhattan could drop to around 10 degrees, with wind chills falling to 5 below zero.
