{"id":108074,"date":"2026-01-22T02:44:13","date_gmt":"2026-01-22T02:44:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/108074\/"},"modified":"2026-01-22T02:44:13","modified_gmt":"2026-01-22T02:44:13","slug":"mamdani-announces-ban-on-nyc-hotels-adding-junk-fees-to-cost-of-stay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/108074\/","title":{"rendered":"Mamdani announces ban on NYC hotels adding &#8216;junk fees&#8217; to cost of stay"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mayor Mamdani <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2025\/12\/22\/mamdani-announces-ftc-alum-sam-levine-to-head-department-of-consumer-and-worker-protection\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced a new rule<\/a> Wednesday banning hotels from sneakily tacking on extra \u201cresort\u201d or \u201cdestination\u201d fees to the price of a stay.<\/p>\n<p>The new rule, adopted by the city\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2026\/01\/05\/mayor-mamdani-looks-to-tighten-consumer-protections-targets-junk-fees\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Department of Consumer and Worker Protection<\/a>, requires hotels to wrap those fees into the advertised price, and would apply to hotels located in the five boroughs, as well as any hotels advertising in New York City. It also requires hotels to disclose credit card holds and deposits upfront.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo those who have long approached business as an opportunity to mistreat those who they serve, let today be a warning,\u201d Mamdani said at a press conference announcing the rule at the Whitney Museum. \u201cIf you do not change your practices, city government will change them for you. Life in our city does not need to be defined by hardship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This action comes as part of a push from the Mamdani administration to crack down on bad actors in the business community.
