As New York City braces for a major snowstorm on Sunday<\/a>, parents, students, and school staff may be wondering if schools will be closed on Monday for a traditional snow day or pivot to remote learning. <\/p>\n

Schools Chancellor Kamar Samuels told PIX11<\/a> on Wednesday morning that the city plans for students to learn virtually on Monday if there is a big storm. <\/p>\n

Chalkbeat<\/a> reported that there is no room in the current school calendar for a traditional snow day for students. Some superintendents have reached out to principals to ensure they\u2019re prepared for a virtual day on Monday, Chalkbeat reported.<\/p>\n

During a press conference on Wednesday, Mayor Zohran Mamdani did not say whether schools would have a traditional snow day or remote learning snow day, according to PIX11. Mamdani said he would make the call as the forecast becomes clearer in the coming days.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are taking every single precaution that we can and I think at this time, a lot of these are hypotheticals, but I can tell you is that we\u2019re not going to be taken by surprise about the weather coming this weekend and we\u2019re also going to communicate directly and clearly to New Yorkers what they should expect,\u201d said Mamdani during Wednesday\u2019s press conference. \u201cRight now, the spectrum of possibilities is large as that gets closer to the date, we will be able to share exactly what New Yorkers should be looking for.\u201d<\/p>\n

During a remote school day, students are expected to log on and engage with their work from home.<\/p>\n

The city began going virtual for possible snow days in 2020<\/a> when all students were fully remote for several months during the pandemic. At the time, former Mayor Bill de Blasio called traditional snow days a \u201cthing of the past.\u201d<\/p>\n

Staten Island and the surrounding New York City area are preparing for a winter storm that is forecasted to bring about 6 inches of snow or more on Sunday.<\/a> It will be accompanied by dangerous wind chills and arctic temperatures early next week.<\/p>\n
