NEW YORK CITY \u2014 A state judge has ruled that New York City’s only Republican congressional district is unconstitutional and must be redrawn by next week. <\/p>\n
State Supreme Court Justice Jeffrey Pearlman on Wednesday ruled that the 11th Congressional District’s current boundaries unlawfully dilute the voting power of Black and Latino voters in Staten Island. <\/p>\n
The 11th Congressional District currently includes Staten Island and parts of southern Brooklyn. <\/p>\n
“Based on the facts presented by the expert witness reports and on the record, it is clear to the Court that the current district lines of CD-11 are a contributing factor in the lack of representation for minority voters,” Pearlman wrote in his decision. <\/p>\n
The state’s Independent Redistricting Commission will have until Feb. 6 to draw a new district. The ruling is expected to be appealed. <\/p>\n
Wednesday’s ruling comes after a lawsuit was filed by the Elias Law Group, and voters from Staten Island and Lower Manhattan who have argued they’ve been disenfranchised. The NAACP New York State Conference also joined the case. <\/p>\n
Plaintiffs in the case have proposed extending the 11th district into Lower Manhattan and keep the entirety of Staten Island. The southern Brooklyn portion would then be transferred to New York\u2019s 10th District, currently represented by Democrat Dan Goldman. <\/p>\n
Malliotakis blasted the judge’s decision and said the lawsuit attempted to silence voters of her district. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe will use every legal option at our disposal, including an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, to protect the voices of the people of Staten Island and Brooklyn, and we are very confident that we will prevail at the end of the day,\u201d she wrote on X. <\/p>\n
