A Westchester County woman accused of abusing and abandoning her severely injured dog was arrested and charged, according to officials.<\/p>\n
Anita Martin allegedly left the dog to die near Oakland Cemetery in Yonkers, the county SPCA said Thursday. <\/p>\n
Earlier in January, authorities shared a video and photo of the injured dog getting walked by an unidentified person in November. Shortly after, the dog was abandoned at the cemetery with a life-threatening cut to the neck and throat, according to the SPCA.<\/p>\n
The dog, which has since been named Frankie, is healing and will soon be put up for adoption at the SPCA’s Rescue Center in Briarcliff Manor, said SPCA Westchester CEO Shannon Laukhuf.<\/p>\n
The 60-year-old Martin was identified after a tip to officials. She was charged with aggravated animal cruelty and abandonment, and is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 9.<\/p>\n
“We are very grateful that Frankie\u2019s case was shared by the media so that the person responsible for this blatant act of cruelty could be quickly located and arrested,” Laukhuf said.<\/p>\n
Attorney information for Martin was not immediately available.<\/p>\n
“As a dog owner and animal lover, I find these cases to be especially heartbreaking.
