{"id":10958,"date":"2025-10-21T17:41:06","date_gmt":"2025-10-21T17:41:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/10958\/"},"modified":"2025-10-21T17:41:06","modified_gmt":"2025-10-21T17:41:06","slug":"boy-on-bike-killed-after-being-struck-by-semi-in-manhattan-il-nbc-chicago","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/10958\/","title":{"rendered":"Boy on bike killed after being struck by semi in Manhattan, IL \u2013 NBC Chicago"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A 13-year-old boy riding a bicycle in the southwest suburbs was killed after he was struck by a semi truck, according to authorities. <\/p>\n<p>About 5:35 p.m. Monday, police and firefighters in Manhattan were dispatched to the intersection of State and East North for an accident involving a bike and a semi truck, a press release from the Village of Manhattan Police Department said. <\/p>\n<p>When officers arrived, they found a 13-year-old boy who was unresponsive and underneath the semi trailer. <\/p>\n<p>The Will County Sheriff\u2019s Police, Will County Coroner\u2019s Office and Illinois State Police, Manhattan Emergency Services were also called to the scene, authorities said. An active investigation was underway. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We kindly ask for everyone\u2019s thoughts, compassion and prayers during these extremely difficult times,&#8221; the police department said. &#8220;Especially for the children and the entire Manhattan community.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/illinois\/manhattan\/boy-fatally-struck-semi-downtown-manhattan-manhattan-pd\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/illinois\/manhattan\/boy-fatally-struck-semi-downtown-manhattan-manhattan-pd\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Local news reports<\/a> said Manhattan School District 114 sent a letter to families saying an eighth grader had been killed. <\/p>\n<p>According to the MSD114 website, all before and after school activities were canceled Tuesday. <\/p>\n<p>The school district did not immediately respond to NBC Chicago&#8217;s request for comment. <\/p>\n<p>In a message posted to the Village of Manhattan&#8217;s Facebook page, Mayor Mike Adrieansen called the incident &#8220;tragic.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As a parent, neighbor, and Mayor of this Village, I share in your grief, your anger, and your urgent desire for change,&#8221; the message read in part. &#8220;No words can ease the pain of losing a child, and no action can undo what has happened, I wish it could.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Andrieansen went on to say that residents have previously expressed concerns about semi-truck traffic, especially near schools, parks, the library, and the community center. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have shared those same concerns with the Illinois Department of Transportation,&#8221; he said. <\/p>\n<p>According to the post, the village has taken steps to improve safety near where the crash took place, including &#8220;adding Rt. 52 as a size-restricted truck route.&#8221; The village also plans to add more crosswalks, an addition intersection at Baker Road at school zone signs near St. Joseph School, the post said. <\/p>\n<p>The village is also calling for a traffic study, the post said, and has implemented a dedicated truck enforcement program. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our children deserve safe streets, protected crossings, and a town where they can move freely without fear,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Our Manhattan Police Department is working with the Illinois State Police, once they have concluded their investigation, we will make those findings public.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A 13-year-old boy riding a bicycle in the southwest suburbs was killed after he was struck by a&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":10959,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[35],"tags":[75,84,83,9,24,63,7057],"class_list":{"0":"post-10958","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-manhattan","8":"tag-manhattan","9":"tag-manhattan-headlines","10":"tag-manhattan-news","11":"tag-new-york","12":"tag-new-york-city","13":"tag-nyc","14":"tag-will-county"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/10958","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=10958"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/10958\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/10959"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=10958"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=10958"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=10958"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
