A water main break along W43rd Street between 9th and 10th Avenues disrupted service for residents and businesses for much of today (Thursday), prompting an FDNY response early in the morning and hours of repair work by city crews.<\/p>\n

FDNY was first called to the block Thursday morning after reports of a water condition affecting surrounding properties. By midday, Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) crews had shut off water in the area to locate the source of the leak, digging into the street near 439 W43rd Street as part of the investigation.<\/p>\n

For neighbors on the block, the impact was immediate. \u201cWhen I left around 8:30 this morning, they were still trying to find the source,\u201d said Charles Guenancia, a resident and business owner nearby, who described seeing basement flooding in one of the buildings on the street. \u201cIt was like an indoor swimming pool \u2014 but not the fun kind.\u201d<\/p>\n

The water shutdown affected all residents on that stretch of W43rd Street, including Manhattan Plaza. Building management alerted tenants via email, and DEP set up a temporary water station using a fire hydrant on 10th Avenue between W42nd and W43rd Streets, where residents could fill buckets and containers while repairs were underway. Manhattan Plaza Health Club was closed for the day due to the lack of running water, however Food Emporium remained open. <\/p>\n

DEP Manhattan Borough Commissioner Marty Fatooh was on site Thursday afternoon, along with outgoing DEP Commissioner Rohit Aggarwala, overseeing the response. Fatooh said the agency\u2019s priority was restoring service as quickly as possible while crews excavated to address the break.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Water service was restored to Manhattan Plaza at approximately 5:15pm, according to DEP, and crews began work to patch the roadway so the street can reopen to vehicle traffic. The cause of the water main break remains under investigation, Fatooh said, but repairs are now in their final stages.<\/p>\n
