{"id":110513,"date":"2026-01-24T00:08:32","date_gmt":"2026-01-24T00:08:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/110513\/"},"modified":"2026-01-24T00:08:32","modified_gmt":"2026-01-24T00:08:32","slug":"special-elections-in-manhattan-queens-what-to-know","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/110513\/","title":{"rendered":"Special elections in Manhattan, Queens: What to know"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There are special elections coming up for three seats in the state Legislature early next month, but only in Manhattan and Queens.<\/p>\n<p>The seats up for a special election are: the 36th Assembly District in Queens, the 74th Assembly District in Manhattan and the 47th state Senate District in Manhattan.<\/p>\n<p>Early voting will take place from Saturday, Jan. 24 to Sunday, Feb. 1 \u2013 but <a href=\"https:\/\/ny1.com\/nyc\/all-boroughs\/politics\/2026\/01\/23\/mamdani-hoylman-sigal-early-voting-special-elections-suspended-amid-storm-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">early voting has been suspended<\/a> on Sunday, Jan. 25 and Monday, Jan. 26 <a href=\"https:\/\/ny1.com\/nyc\/all-boroughs\/news\/2026\/01\/22\/weekend-storm-january-2026-snow-ice-travel-delays\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">due to the winter storm<\/a> that is expected to impact the five boroughs. Election Day is Tuesday, Feb. 3.<\/p>\n<p>Check the city\u2019s Board of Elections\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vote.nyc\/elections\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">website<\/a> to see if your neighborhood is included in the special elections.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s everything you need to know.<\/p>\n<p>36th Assembly District in Queens<\/p>\n<p>The 36th Assembly District was vacated by Zohran Mamdani, who <a href=\"https:\/\/ny1.com\/nyc\/manhattan\/news\/2026\/01\/01\/zohran-mamdani-addresses-new-yorkers-as-nyc-s-mayor-at-inauguration-ceremony\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">became the mayor of New York City<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The candidates for the seat are Diana Moreno, who is on the Democratic Party and Working Families Party lines; Rana Abdelhamid, who is on the &#8220;Queens for All&#8221; Party line; and Mary Jobaida, who is on the &#8220;People First&#8221; Party line.<\/p>\n<p>The Queens district covers much of western and central Astoria, Ditmars, Astoria Heights and northern Long Island City.<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani won the seat in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>47th Senate District in Manhattan<\/p>\n<p>The 47th Senate District in Manhattan was vacated by Brad Hoylman-Sigal, who <a href=\"https:\/\/ny1.com\/nyc\/all-boroughs\/news\/2025\/11\/05\/nyc-november-general-election-2025-wrap-up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">took on the role of Manhattan borough president<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The candidates for the seat are Manhattan Councilman Erik Bottcher, who is on the Democratic and Working Families Party lines; and Charlotte Friedman, who is on the Republican Party line.<\/p>\n<p>The Manhattan district includes neighborhoods such as Greenwich Village, Chelsea, Hell\u2019s Kitchen and the Upper West Side, along with part of Central Park.<\/p>\n<p>Hoylman-Sigal won the seat in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>74th Assembly District in Manhattan<\/p>\n<p>The 74th Assembly District in Manhattan was vacated by Harvey Epstein, who became the City Council member for District 2 in Manhattan.<\/p>\n<p>The candidates for the seat are Keith Powers, who is on the Democratic line; and Joseph Foley, who is on the Republican and Conservative Party lines.<\/p>\n<p>The Manhattan district includes the Lower East Side, East Village and Midtown East.<\/p>\n<p>Epstein won the seat in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Early voting times<\/p>\n<p>Saturday, Jan. 24 \u2014 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.<br \/>\nSunday, Jan. 25 \u2014 SUSPENDED DUE TO WINTER STORM<br \/>\nMonday, Jan. 26 \u2014 SUSPENDED DUE TO WINTER STORM<br \/>\nTuesday, Jan. 27 \u2014 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.<br \/>\nWednesday, Jan. 28 \u2014 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.<br \/>\nThursday, Jan. 29 \u2014 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.<br \/>\nFriday, Jan. 30 \u2014 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.<br \/>\nSaturday, Jan. 31 \u2014 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.<br \/>\nSunday, Feb. 1 \u2014 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>On Election Day, polls are open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Voting by mail<\/p>\n<p>Registered voters are now allowed to obtain\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vote.nyc\/RequestBallot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">early mail voting ballots<\/a>\u202fby applying to the city Board of Elections, thanks to the New York Early Mail Voter Act.<\/p>\n<p>All registered voters are eligible to apply for an early mail ballot.<\/p>\n<p>There are several ways to apply for an early voting ballot: Use the <a href=\"https:\/\/requestballot.vote.nyc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">online Ballot Request Application portal<\/a>, go in person to your local county Board of Elections, or allow another person to deliver the application in person to the local county Board of Elections. For voters with a print disability, apply by using the <a href=\"https:\/\/requestballot.vote.nyc\/accessibility\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">online Accessible Ballot Application<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Applications submitted by mail need to be received by your <a href=\"https:\/\/publicreporting.elections.ny.gov\/CountyBoardRoster\/CountyBoardRoster\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">county Board of Elections<\/a> no later than 10 days before the election in order for a voter to be eligible to vote in the general election.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The last day to apply online is Jan. 24. The day before the primary election \u2014 Monday, Feb. 2 \u2014 is the last day in-person applications can be submitted.<\/p>\n<p>There are several ways an early ballot can be returned.
