\u201cYou develop these relationships with these coaches \u2014 we worked together for a couple of years \u2014 and then you know you are going to have to make some tough decisions,\u201d he added. \u201cYou spend more time with them than you do your own family that they become your family, and when you\u2019re making those phone calls, it just breaks your heart.\u201d<\/p>\n
Despite the rough start to the offseason, Mendoza has seen an upturn with the Mets going on a massive free agency spree in January, signing Bo Bichette and trading for Luis Robert and Freddy Peralta all within days of each other.<\/p>\n
Mendoza insisted that Bichette\u2019s signing was not a \u201cpanic pivot\u201d because the Mets failed to land Kyle Tucker, saying that the organization was \u201cprepared\u201d to give the two-time All-Star a deal.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t see it as a panic because we laid down that foundation,\u201d Mendoza said of Bichette\u2019s signing. \u201cWe were prepared, we had two calls with him. \u2026This wasn\u2019t like \u2018oh, Tucker went somewhere else and the very next day here we are signing Bo.\u2019 We had meetings with him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Just days after Bichette signed a three-year, $126 million deal with the Mets, David Stearns made a trade with the White Sox for Robert, giving up Luisangel Acuna and minor league arm Truman Pauley in return.<\/p>\n
Mendoza liked the deal, but acknowledged that Robert \u2014 who has missed 114 games over the past two seasons \u2014 needs to stay on the field, and that the Mets\u2019 medical staff has already been in contact with the outfielder.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen he\u2019s healthy, he\u2019s one of the best,\u201d Mendoza said.<\/p>\n
Mendoza also said that immediately after the Mets traded for Peralta \u2014 and reliever Tobias Myers \u2014 on Wednesday, he got on the phone and had a \u201cvery good conversation\u201d with the 29-year-old righty.<\/p>\n
Despite the huge splash the Mets have made over the past week, Mendoza claimed that they are not done building the 2026 roster.<\/p>\n
