The dangerous winter storm<\/a> that\u2019s blowing into New York City<\/a> will start dropping snow between 3 a.m. and 9 a.m. Sunday \u2014 and we could be in for up to 16 inches, the latest weather models predict.<\/p>\n

However, the Big Apple burbs west and north of the city will be hardest hit by the blizzard, dubbed \u201cWinter Storm Fern.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s certainly not recommended to travel on Sunday. Do what you gotta do on Saturday \u2014 and then stay put,\u201d said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Tom Kines.<\/p>\n

Experts advised staying off the roads in the tri-state area Sunday. AP<\/p>\n

Kines predicted a travel \u201cdisaster\u201d<\/a> on tri-state-area roads and at airports, but said the intense snowfall will likely be over \u201cby lunchtime\u201d Monday.<\/p>\n

The short answer is: stay home Sunday if at all possible.<\/p>\n

\u201cSidewalks aren\u2019t gonna be cleaned off for a while,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u201cI don\u2019t think there\u2019s any type of travel that\u2019s going be safe on Sunday.\u201d<\/p>\n

Areas north and west of the Big Apple, including the Hudson Valley \u2014 where one forecaster predicted up to 20\u00a0inches of snow \u2014 are likely to be hardest hit, Kines said.<\/p>\n

Areas closer to the coastline, including parts of Long Island, may see a slushy-icy winter mix instead of snow, Kines said<\/p>\n

If the potentially historic storm moves north, the more likely scenario,\u00a0the Big Apple and much of the tri-state area can expect to see a more modest 4 to 8 inches of snow.<\/p>\n

The storm \u2014 which is expected to pummel up to 40 US states, placing 250 million people in its \u201ccatastrophic\u201d path \u2014 comes as temperatures plunge into the low teens in New York City over the weekend.<\/p>\n

The city will shiver through a\u00a0 bone-chilling low of 13 degrees Saturday, and 19 degrees Sunday as the storm hits, according to AccuWeather.<\/p>\n
