NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — New York is set to get at least 4 to 8 inches of snow this weekend, as a big winter storm and the coldest air of the season overtake the city, forecasters said Thursday.<\/p>\n

A Winter Storm Watch has been issued<\/a> for much of the area, including NYC from late Saturday to early afternoon. A Cold Weather Advisory is also up<\/a> starting Friday night.<\/p>\n

According to AccuWeather, local snow amounts may reach a foot under the right circumstances, especially on the North Shore of Long Island and in the northwest suburbs. Sleet may mix with snow to the south of the city.<\/p>\n

\u201cConfidence is increasing for a winter storm to impact the region Sunday through Monday,\u201d the National Weather Service said<\/a>. \u201cA significant snowfall is possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

The storm is expected to hit around daybreak Sunday and continue throughout the day before tapering off early Monday. Exact snow amounts could fluctuate depending on the track of the storm.<\/p>\n

The blast of snow will be accompanied by a dangerous burst of Arctic air. Highs will be 18 degrees on Saturday and 20 degrees on Sunday. Wind chills will be near zero on Saturday and subzero on Sunday.<\/p>\n

The combination of ice-cold temps and heavy snow could paralyze travel not only in the Tri-State area on Sunday and Monday but also across much of the East Coast. Big cities like Philadelphia, Washington, Baltimore, Atlanta and Charlotte are all in the path of the storm.<\/p>\n

While the storm will pass, the brutal cold will stick around through next week, with highs in the teens and 20s to end January.<\/p>\n
