{"id":1117,"date":"2025-10-14T09:28:20","date_gmt":"2025-10-14T09:28:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/1117\/"},"modified":"2025-10-14T09:28:20","modified_gmt":"2025-10-14T09:28:20","slug":"storm-halts-holiday-parade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/1117\/","title":{"rendered":"Storm halts holiday parade"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Heavy rain and gusty winds sweeping through New York City on Monday led to the cancellation of two major holiday events: the annual Columbus Day Parade and a celebration of Indigenous Peoples on Randall\u2019s Island.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Parade organizers announced late Sunday that the event, a decades-old tradition featuring marching bands and community groups along Fifth Avenue, would not be rescheduled.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, a special mass honoring the day\u2019s Italian American heritage is still scheduled for Monday morning at St. Patrick\u2019s Cathedral.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>City officials also confirmed that the Indigenous Peoples\u2019 Day celebration, one of the largest such gatherings in the world, has been called off because of the weather. The two-day festival typically draws thousands of participants and performers representing Native communities from across the Americas.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>New York City is among the few places that formally recognize both Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples\u2019 Day. Across the country, nine states and Washington, D.C., have established Indigenous Peoples\u2019 Day, while 10 others observe it in some form or commemorate Native Americans on a separate date.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Because both holidays are observed locally, city services are operating on a holiday schedule. Public schools, post offices, public libraries, and most government offices are closed.
