Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.) said on Sunday he plans to speak soon with President Trump to discuss a path forward as he considers whether to launch a bid for governor in New York.<\/p>\n<p>Entering the statewide race would likely pit him against Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.), who is gearing up <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/campaign\/5371832-stefanik-prepares-launch-governor-race\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">to launch her own campaign<\/a> against New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D).<\/p>\n<p>But, in an interview on NewsNation\u2019s \u201cThe Hill Sunday,\u201d the swing-district Republican said he has no interest in a contested primary challenge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going to be meeting with the president at some point soon and have a conversation about the path forward,\u201d Lawler said in the interview. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut one way or the other, we need to have a united front \u2014 whether it\u2019s me, whether it\u2019s Elise Stefanik \u2014 we need to be focused on defeating Kathy Hochul. Any effort, time or money wasted in a primary is money, time and effort not spent defeating Kathy Hochul next year,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n<p>President Trump in May endorsed Lawler\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/campaign\/5287225-trump-endorses-lawler-reelection-campaign\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">reelection campaign<\/a> for the House, a move seen as a potential indicator of support for Stefanik.<\/p>\n<p>Lawler acknowledged the importance of his seat for retaining the House majority, but he made clear he was not ready to set aside all ambitions for statewide office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand how important my seat is, obviously, to keeping control of the House,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m one of only three Republicans representing a district that [former Vice President Kamala Harris] won, and we have to hold the House.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I also understand how important it is to have a real leader in New York,\u201d he continued. \u201cKathy Hochul is the most feckless, incompetent governor in the nation.
