<\/p>\nAs a child in the urban outskirts of Paris, Fabien Conti relished each Wednesday he spent in nature with his grandmother. Within a field of grass, he felt he had room to breathe. Landscapes still transfix the 27-year-old artist, who is currently showing eight such paintings at Galerie Laura Gonzalez in Manhattan\u2019s TriBeCa neighborhood. The solo show opened in December, marking Conti\u2019s first in New York, and kicked off Gonzalez\u2019s \u201cgallery within a gallery\u201d concept, which will bring new art exhibitions to the design space every three to six months.<\/p>\n

Conti\u2019s atmospheric \u201cHerbes\u201d series on canvas transports viewers to a micro version of his childhood perspective. With a bug\u2019s eye view, he paints photorealistic sways of grass against imagined color field skies, from a deep teal storm to a dusty pink sunrise. The artworks are inspired by a trip he took with his mother to Japan after graduating from Paris\u2019s Beaux-Arts school. \u201cThe landscape there was very calm, but always changing color,\u201d says the artist, citing Claude Monet\u2019s approach to hue and David Hockney\u2019s use of window perspectives as references for his own practice.<\/p>\n
This romantic depiction of nature initially attracted Gonzalez when she discovered Conti\u2019s work on Instagram. A pink-skied painting caught her eye, and after a visit to his studio in Paris, she decided to curate a dedicated show. \u201cI wanted to capture Conti\u2019s feeling of being engulfed by a large landscape,\u201d says the Elle Decor A-List designer, \u201cand to reinterpret that in design.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the entrance of the gallery, the designer created a physical dialogue between Conti\u2019s paintings and eight of her own Landscape table lamps\u2014eco-resin and marble fixtures whose bulbous forms reference budding flowers. Elsewhere in the space, her other new pieces (there are 25 in total) also allude to nature. The Quilt table\u2019s resin top is patterned like a patchwork of fields from above; the sculptural bronze legs of the \u00c9corce tables reference bark on tree trunks; the backs of a pair of Colline sofas arch gently like hills on the horizon.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I started my gallery business, I had the ambition to change products every three months,\u201d says Gonzalez, whose flagship showroom is in Paris. \u201cThe first time I did, people came back and said, \u2018Where’s my sofa? I didn’t have time to sit in it.\u2019\u201d She learned her lesson. Because the design industry moves at a slower pace than the art world, rotating exhibits like Conti\u2019s \u201cLandscapes\u201d\u2014on view through March\u2014will regularly invite fresh perspectives into the New York gallery while leaving ample time for clients to sit and enjoy. \u201cI don’t want to be like fashion industry,\u201d Gonzalez says. \u201cI don’t want to have this seasonal pressure.\u201d With this approach, Gonzalez\u2019s eye-catching collections, and those of artists she has chosen to feature, have room to bloom.<\/p>\n
