The question mark was kind of how far north this storm was going to track. Obviously it tracked fairly far north,\u201d Kines explained.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Snow 1\/15\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/TJR7RLRVTBCG7GCGBXC3WVSBGI.JPG\"  \/>Nearly 1 foot of snowfall has piled up as of 2 p.m. on Staten Island&#8217;s south shore.Advance\/SILive.com | Shaina McLawrence<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WGOHGLS43FD4BNKE5TBSB6PQH4\">The storm\u2019s arrival is creating hazardous conditions that are expected to persist through the afternoon, with snow falling at a rate of about an inch per hour. By mid-morning, three to four inches had already accumulated, with several more hours of steady snowfall expected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"Q2SJSG4Q3NHGFIIXYR3BCQVBAE\">\u201cMost of the accumulation is probably going to be before 2 p.m. and then we\u2019ll get some sleet thrown in, maybe even freezing rain,\u201d Kines said. \u201cOnce you start getting that sleet, it\u2019s more difficult to accumulate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7DFEOCFT5FFMFCPQVME4H2ERL4\">Kines noted that the storm\u2019s specific northern track has actually moderated what could have been even heavier snowfall totals locally. The system\u2019s path is bringing in warmer air, which is causing the transition from snow to sleet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NZGKTSXDYNBXLO4KKXZ7DLA2HU\">\u201cIf you\u2019re one of those people that loves snow and everything, the storm actually tracked too far north because it\u2019s bringing some warmer air in. The precipitation will change to sleet,\u201d Kines noted. He urged residents to stay home if possible until road crews can clear accumulated snow and ice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NSGOYSFL2JFXTN2JFVVVHVHN3Y\">The forecaster indicated that as the storm begins to pull away this evening, the precipitation may change back to snow for a short period. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2IYSUKBGCJACFD643MZ72PMS5U\">\u201cI think as the storm pulls away, the sleet will probably change back to snow at least for a time tonight. I don\u2019t think there\u2019s a whole lot more accumulation with that,\u201d Kines said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"C5GBUFOVJVHF3J6EZYVYPSSRYQ\">By Monday morning, there might still be some snow in the air, but the main system will have moved on. <\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Snow 1\/15\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/DHAHFEPBCBFPXDOY5H26TG7GS4.JPG\"  \/>Nearly 1 foot of snowfall has piled up as of 2 p.m. on Staten Island&#8217;s south shore.Advance\/SILive.com | Shaina McLawrence<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IRB2UBIG6JCADLBBAOI5ZR6SLU\">\u201cBy tomorrow morning, it\u2019s going to be probably southeast of New England, moving out away from the coast,\u201d Tom explained. \u201cIt\u2019ll just be bothering the fish early in the week and not affecting us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UUWRA6NMLZG25CYUOKPTEUFKMA\">Once the storm departs, residents should prepare for even colder temperatures. While highs tomorrow will reach the mid to upper twenties \u2014 \u201ca taste of spring compared to what the rest of the week is going to feel like,\u201d according to Tom \u2014 the days following will bring much colder conditions with high temperatures only reaching the teens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CMACHN3N2ZHWPE2DVXGR6VTEN4\">Wind will remain a factor, making the cold even more uncomfortable. \u201cWhen it\u2019s this cold and you get the slightest wind, it\u2019s very noticeable,\u201d Tom said, adding that the wind chill could make temperatures feel \u201c10 to maybe at times 20 degrees\u201d colder than the actual readings.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Snow 1\/15\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/GCMRDU4WZFF4VNWJNJKJ5FDXLY.JPG\"  \/>Nearly 1 foot of snowfall has piled up as of 2 p.m. on Staten Island&#8217;s south shore.Advance\/SILive.com | Shaina McLawrence<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"C2OPTVQ5CBH6PAPYZXSPV74YJU\">The good news is that once this system moves offshore, there are no additional major storms on the horizon. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"B2DSJJUDPBDTJKCHN6BVAZOBXE\">\u201cOnce you get rid of the storm, other than the cold, there\u2019s not a whole lot of weather going on in our neck of the woods for the next several days,\u201d Tom said. \u201cMaybe at some point there\u2019s a weak front that comes through and gives us some flurries, but there\u2019s no storms to be worried about after Monday morning, at least through the end of the week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Travel disruptions<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LMJGRZMX6JARJM5DBN67TU5SVI\">Commuters should be prepared for delays and adjusted service on the water today, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ferry.nyc\/service-alerts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ferry.nyc\/service-alerts\/\">according to the NYC Ferry.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"Y74XX7BIZFEZHMSGFSVS34VK5Q\">The Staten Island Ferry is running on a modified hourly schedule today <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2026\/01\/snowstorm-brutal-cold-disrupt-staten-island-rest-of-nyc-latest-updates.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2026\/01\/snowstorm-brutal-cold-disrupt-staten-island-rest-of-nyc-latest-updates.html\">due to the inclement weather.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"YJ3LYLEVYVH4DMXQQC6FHR6GRA\">Due to low visibility, all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/weather\/2026\/01\/ny-weather-staten-island-ferry-running-hourly-schedule-amid-visibility-issues.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/weather\/2026\/01\/ny-weather-staten-island-ferry-running-hourly-schedule-amid-visibility-issues.html\">NYC Ferry service has been suspended since 11 a.m.<\/a> until further notice.
