But one topic they never touch on: child welfare.\u00a0<\/p>\n In New York City,\u00a0Julissia Batties<\/a>,\u00a0Jelayah Eason<\/a>,\u00a0Jameik Modlin<\/a>\u00a0and other children have been killed in recent years, allegedly by parents or caregivers \u2014 illustrating the high stakes for the city\u2019s child welfare agency, the Administration for Children\u2019s Services.<\/p>\n NY1’s Annika Pergament asked the candidates how they would manage the agency tasked with keeping children safe.<\/p>\n 2.\u00a0N.Y. man pardoned for Jan. 6 crimes charged with threat\u00adening to kill House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries<\/a><\/p>\n A New York man who was pardoned for crimes committed during the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol has been charged with threatening to kill U.S. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, New York State Police said today.<\/p>\n According to a felony complaint, Christopher Moynihan, 34, sent text messages on Oct. 17 saying \u201cHakeem Jeffries makes a speech in a few days in NYC I cannot allow this terrorist to live\u201d and \u201cEven if I am heated he must be eliminated,\u201d followed by \u201cI will kill him for the future.\u201d<\/p>\n 3.\u00a0Affordability, housing and public safety top of mind for Riverdale voters<\/a><\/p>\n Situated in the Bronx’s northwest section, Riverdale’s total population as of the last census stands at just under 100,000 residents, with a large white and Hispanic population.<\/p>\n And while the neighborhood has a larger number of homeowners, residents told NY1’s Bernadette Hogan that affordability concerns are giving them pause as to whether they can afford to stay in the community for the long-term.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, Catherine Chen, CEO of the Asian American Federation, joined “News All Day”<\/a>\u00a0to discuss some of the top issues for Asian American voters ahead of the mayoral election.\u00a0<\/p>\n And Elizabeth Glazer, the founder and co-editor of the publication “Vital City,” joined the show<\/a> to discuss how public safety and Rikers Island factor into the race.<\/p>\n 4.\u00a0Mahmoud Khalil appears in appeals court as Trump administration continues efforts to deport him<\/a><\/p>\n Mahmoud Khalil appeared today in a federal appeals court in Philadelphia as he continues to challenge a deportation case brought by President Donald Trump’s administration over his\u00a0pro-Palestinian activism\u00a0at Columbia University.<\/p>\n The hearing before the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals came as the government seeks to overturn a lower court order\u00a0granting Khalil\u2019s June release\u00a0from a Louisiana immigration jail.<\/p>\n 5.\u00a0Vance visits Israel and says ceasefire in Gaza is going better than expected<\/a><\/p>\n Vice President JD Vance and other envoys projected optimism today about\u00a0Gaza’s fragile ceasefire agreement, calling progress better than anticipated as they visited a new center in Israel for civilian and military cooperation.<\/p>\n Vance noted\u00a0flareups of violence in recent days\u00a0but said the ceasefire that began on Oct. 10 is going \u201cbetter than I expected\u201d after two years of war between Israel and Hamas. The Trump administration’s Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, added that \u201cwe are exceeding where we thought we would be at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n 6.\u00a0White House: No Trump-Putin meet ‘in the immediate future’ after Budapest summit floated<\/a><\/p>\n President Trump\u2019s\u00a0plan for a swift meeting\u00a0with Russian leader Vladimir Putin has been postponed with no summit set to occur “in the immediate future,” a White House official confirmed to Spectrum News today, the latest twist in his stop-and-go effort to resolve the war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n The meeting was announced last week and was supposed to take place in Budapest, Hungary, in the near future.
