STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 New York City property owners must clear sidewalks within specific timeframes after snowfall stops, New York City Emergency Management<\/a> says, with deadlines ranging from four hours to the next morning depending on when the precipitation ends.<\/p>\n

While the Department of Sanitation handles snow removal on streets and bike lanes, property owners bear responsibility for keeping sidewalks passable. The city requires a clear path of at least four feet wide where possible to accommodate all pedestrians.<\/p>\n

Property owners face legal consequences if they push snow into streets or bike lanes, as this interferes with municipal clearing operations. Instead, snow should be placed against buildings, at the curb line, or on private property.<\/p>\n

The clearing deadlines vary based on when snow stops falling. If snowfall ends between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., property owners have four hours to clear their sidewalks. If snow stops between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m., they have 14 hours. If precipitation ends between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m., sidewalks must be cleared by 11 a.m.<\/p>\n

City officials recommend safe shoveling practices, including warming up before starting, taking frequent breaks, dressing appropriately and staying hydrated. Residents should monitor how they feel during rest periods to prevent injury.<\/p>\n
