Gone is the iconographic lone male runner. The rationale was to modernize the logo, last updated in 2012, while making it more inclusive.

“Our events are in groups,” explained New York Road Runners CEO Rob Simmelkjaer. “And depending on the race, close to 50% of the runners are women, so we want anyone to be able to see themselves in this.”

The New York Road Runners wanted a logo that was more inclusive and highlighted the group’s broader mission. New York Road Runners

Underscoring that assertion, 45.86% of the finishers in the most recent NYC Marathon were women. The rebrand is also intended to establish a better and more enduring link between the Road Runners and what is arguably the world’s most renowned marathon, which attracted a record number of finishers (59,226) for any marathon last year.

Accordingly, the NYRR acronym is within the primary logo, and the full organization’s name is incorporated.

“Another goal was linking our nonprofit better to New York City, all of our community efforts and events, along with the marathon itself,” said Juliette Morris, NYRR chief marketing and digital officer. NYRR administers more than 60 running events annually along with the NYC Marathon, all of which it claims is a total local economic impact of $934 million.

“It’s a way to emphasize who and what we are, beyond just the marathon,” Morris said.

Chermayeff & Geismar & Haviv also updated the logo for the TCS-sponsored NYC Marathon in 2023.

“We needed something that invited more participation and engagement. Everyone could see it then,” said Sagi Haviv, partner and designer for the firm, which also did logos for the U.S. Open Tennis Championships and the ATP. “We needed something that invited more participation and engagement. And obviously, the torch has a long and historic connection with running.”

The new NYRR logo will begin to appear digitally this week and get wide exposure during the March 15 United Airlines NYC Half Marathon.

Concomitantly, the NYRR is introducing a new brand positioning and tagline from agency Yard NYC. “Believe in Every Step” is replacing the “Run for Life” tagline. Again, equality is the objective.

“Better reflecting our nonprofit mission and opening it up to non-runners,” Simmelkjaer said of the rebrand’s purpose. “We want to show community, inclusivity, and it’s a mark that can represent all that we do.”

New York Road Runners logos through the years New York Road Runners

Terry Lefton can be reached at tlefton@sportsbusinessjournal.com.

NYC Marathon parent New York Road Runners is rebranding with a logo that does not depict a runner…

[6
9,11,10,13296,50218
0":"post-112644","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-new-york","8":"tag-new-york","9":"tag-new-york-headlines","10":"tag-new-york-news","11":"tag-print","12":"tag-the-insiders
["GET
