{"id":112973,"date":"2026-01-26T17:25:20","date_gmt":"2026-01-26T17:25:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/112973\/"},"modified":"2026-01-26T17:25:20","modified_gmt":"2026-01-26T17:25:20","slug":"founder-of-winick-realty-ordered-to-pay-9m-in-back-taxes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/112973\/","title":{"rendered":"Founder Of Winick Realty Ordered To Pay $9M In Back Taxes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The former head of a prominent New York City real estate broker must finally pay the government\u00a0millions in taxes he dodged starting more than a decade ago.<\/p>\n<p>                        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/placeholder.png\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Placeholder\"\/><\/p>\n<p>A bankruptcy judge ordered\u00a0<a class=\"tag tag-42376\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bisnow.com\/tags\/jeff-winick\" target=\"_blank\" data-tag-id=\"42376\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jeff Winick<\/a> to pay roughly $9M to the <a class=\"tag tag-35308\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bisnow.com\/tags\/internal-revenue-service\" target=\"_blank\" data-tag-id=\"35308\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Internal Revenue Service<\/a> for income tax he failed to pay between 2012 and 2016, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bloomberglaw.com\/bankruptcy-law\/nyc-real-estate-firms-ex-ceo-must-pay-9-million-tax-bill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bloomberg Law first reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Winick, the founder and longtime CEO of retail specialist <a class=\"tag tag-40942\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bisnow.com\/tags\/winick-realty-group\" target=\"_blank\" data-tag-id=\"40942\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Winick Realty Group<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bisnow.com\/new-york\/news\/retail\/jeff-winick-realty-group-bankruptcy-sale-109880\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">filed for bankruptcy in 2020<\/a>, claiming roughly $10M in liabilities and $500K in assets. The IRS sued him later that year, claiming he had fraudulently transferred assets to his family and business partners and lived a lavish lifestyle while evading income taxes.<\/p>\n<p>Winick lost more than $12M from gambling in the years leading up to his bankruptcy, which he claimed was &#8220;non-volitional&#8221; spending due to a gambling addiction.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Philip Bentley didn&#8217;t buy that, pointing to other years\u00a0Winick gambled and still paid taxes, as well as his luxury lifestyle: paying $180K in annual rent for a <a class=\"tag tag-101105\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bisnow.com\/tags\/southampton\" target=\"_blank\" data-tag-id=\"101105\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Southampton<\/a> vacation home, dozens of international trips, and shopping sprees for his ex-wife, ex-girlfriend and daughter.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The former retail mogul took home millions in commissions but instructed his company&#8217;s accountants to only withhold taxes from his salary. He also transferred shares in his businesses and properties he owned to his daughter for no consideration, which the <a class=\"tag tag-35309\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bisnow.com\/tags\/irs\" target=\"_blank\" data-tag-id=\"35309\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">IRS<\/a> pointed to as a likely tax dodge.<\/p>\n<p>In his 46-page ruling, Bentley wrote that Winick&#8217;s tax filing year after year was \u201can outright fabrication.\u201d Winick did pay nearly $2M in taxes between 2014 and 2020 \u2014 \u201ca significant achievement,\u201d Bentley wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Winick argued during the case\u00a0that he planned to pay the taxes if he\u00a0got\u00a0a big win at the casino or had a big year in business, but that never happened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA hope of this sort is little different from that of many Ponzi artists and other fraudsters who rationalize their wrongs by telling themselves they will one day repay their victims,\u201d the judge wrote. \u201cSuch hopes are no excuse for fraud\u2014and in this case, any hopes and good intentions Winick may have had are no excuse for his repeated and willful choice to gamble with the government\u2019s money and then flout the tax laws and lie to the IRS to prevent it from taking steps to collect his back taxes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A year after the bankruptcy filing, Winick&#8217;s\u00a0majority stake\u00a0in his business\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/therealdeal.com\/new-york\/2021\/11\/09\/majority-stake-in-winick-realty-auctioned-to-insiders-as-irs-waves-red-flags\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">was auctioned off<\/a>\u00a0to company insiders.
