However, and perhaps more importantly, no team wants to peak at the beginning just to trail off and settle when it knows what it\u2019s capable of.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RNVKIDMU2NAD7M3VF2TUBXYZHI\">That, perhaps, is St. Joseph-St. Thomas St. John Neumann\u2019s recipe to success as it looks to earn back-to-back CYO Small Varsity Island and State championships in March.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image-gallery-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/COLQEBQBIBDIVBXIEGIMAQHB7Q.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image-gallery-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/6GFAENEGYJG2BDUMU2QOQJVZLQ.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>1\/50<\/p>\n<p class=\"image-gallery-caption\">SJSTSJN looks to earn second consecutive CYO Island and State titles<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QSOFBPSH6ZDGTMMQE3XM7XYXMI\">\u201cLast year, honestly, it didn\u2019t quickly come together and it was only towards the end that we started doing upgrades and adding [new skills], and I feel like that\u2019s happening again this year,\u201d said SJSTSJN coach Antonette Scarola. \u201cIt\u2019s slowly, slowly gelling and coming together [like last season], but when it clicks they\u2019re a force.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"K7BBC273V5HQXLLJW5IFJJW3H4\">\u201cWe also try to instill in them to never be content where they are,\u201d added Vianna Passalacqua, with Jenna Malandruccolo rounding off the staff. \u201cWhether it takes them a little bit longer or not, we want them to be wanting more even on their best day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ARK7X7O2UVGVHEHAN6AHQJJKW4\">With a motto of being \u201cSaint Strong\u201d this year, the squad had to regroup after losing five eighth-graders to graduation last year. But, with the addition of two fifth-graders and even a fourth-grader in a division that\u2019s typically 6th to 8th, the coaching staff believes they\u2019re setting up for future success.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7L22K2XTTFB4VJUJ5FOVAEMPZM\">\u201cAny of our kids are worth the effort it takes to improve and be their best, so it\u2019s more about having [them] realize what it\u2019s like to be at a varsity level in a much quicker amount of time,\u201d said Passalacqua. \u201cWe lost kids that we\u2019ve had for several years and who the team was cultivated around, so we\u2019re working on making sure our new faces have the same type of bonds and connections they did in years past.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5FRTZW3TUZBYRD52FSARXBE2PQ\">Besides their bond off the mat, one portion of the Saints\u2019 routine that sets them apart from competitors is their first pyramid. The sequence, which sees a flyer flip up and land with a single base while two tumblers match the skill on the ground, is \u201creally cool when executed right\u201d according to Passalacqua.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"V3KJHBJLYNBXROSLPQBNCA2B4E\">Now, with less than a month and a half until the first CYO competition, SJSTSJN is focused on making each practice and performance better than the one before.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5GW64FE3LNELHOUTCRRF33573E\">\u201c[We want them] to push, push, push &#8211; to do the most and to give every single thing they have on the mat. They can\u2019t not let themselves believe that they can\u2019t be better than they were the day before,\u201d emphasized Passalacqua. \u201cWe don\u2019t put the emphasis on \u2018you need to win,\u2019 but on competing against themselves every single time. [Our last competition] wasn\u2019t a great performance for them and that\u2019s what they need to overcome now &#8211; not the second place, but that they weren\u2019t at their best.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NRIGB5VWBZED3PVV5RVJ2PYA3I\">\u201cThey have one job to do, and that\u2019s it,\u201d concluded Scarola. \u201cThat\u2019s what we say to them when they go to competition.
