Today, Mayor Zohran\u00a0Mamdani\u00a0and\u00a0New York City<\/a> Public Schools\u00a0Chancellor Kamar Samuels (NYCPS) announced\u202fthat\u00a0all New York City Public Schools will\u00a0be open\u00a0for in-person\u00a0learning Tuesday, January 27, 2026, following a one-day pivot to remote instruction Monday.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

All programs and activities will resume as scheduled.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAs dedicated city workers mobilized across all five boroughs to clear our streets and keep New Yorkers safe, teachers and students this morning came together online\u00a0\u2013\u00a0reading, learning and staying connected,\u201d said\u00a0Mayor Mamdani. \u201cThanks to the round-the-clock work of our schools facilities teams, we are ready to welcome students and staff back to classrooms tomorrow. I am deeply grateful to our school leaders, educators and families for making today\u2019s remote learning day a success and for preparing our students to return.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen it mattered most, our communities worked together to weather the storm,\u201d said Schools Chancellor Samuels. \u201cTo our dedicated school staff who have worked tirelessly to ensure our pathways are clear, our classrooms are warm and breakfast is served tomorrow\u00a0\u2013 thank you. To all our educators, school leaders and staff who made the pivot to remote learning successful, and to our students and families for their partnership and adaptability\u00a0\u2013 thank you.\u00a0I am proud to lead such a dynamic and resilient school system in a city that once again rose to the occasion.\u201d<\/p>\n

Over the weekend and throughout Monday, NYCPS deployed facilities teams to\u00a0every\u00a0school building to\u00a0prepare for students\u2019\u00a0return. This work included\u00a0ice and snow removal at school entrances and surrounding areas, ss well as measures to ensure buildings are properly heated\u00a0for students and staff.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The\u00a0decision\u00a0to\u00a0pivot to remote instruction on Monday prioritized\u00a0the safety of students, families and staff while maintaining continuity of learning and\u00a0meeting New York\u00a0State\u2019s\u00a0180-day instructional requirement. Preliminary data show that nearly 375,000\u00a0students and parents\u00a0\u2013 nearly 80% of expected students \u2014\u00a0successfully logged into virtual classrooms, supported by more than 125,000 educators. High school students and students in grades six through eight attending schools that serve grades six through twelve maintained the day off\u00a0on Monday,\u00a0due to a previously scheduled professional learning day.\u202f\u202f<\/p>\n

The\u00a0successful\u00a0transition to remote learning was made\u00a0possible\u00a0through\u00a0close\u00a0interagency\u00a0collaboration, which ensured students had the necessary devices and connectivity,\u00a0log-in systems were stress-tested and classrooms were ready to open Tuesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n
