Outdoor sports brand Patagonia has sued drag queen and environmental activist Pattie Gonia for trademark infringement.\u00a0<\/p>\n
On 21 January, the clothing company took action against Pattie Gonia, whose name out of drag is Wyn Wiley, citing alleged trademark infringement.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The brand\u2019s press release states<\/a>: \u201cWhile we wish we didn\u2019t have to do this \u2013 and actively engaged with Pattie for several years to avoid this \u2013 it has become necessary to protect the brand we have spent the last 50 years building.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n Patagonia\u2019s statement claimed that the legal action against the drag queen is due to her failing to stick to a previously made agreement, with the retailer claiming that in late 2024, the drag star began \u201cselling \u2018Pattie Gonia\u2019 branded apparel online and continued to create and use versions of our logo\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n It goes on to claim that the drag queen filed a trademark application seeking the exclusive rights to use the name as a brand in September 2025, which it noted would \u201cpose long-term threats to Patagonia\u2019s brand and our activism\u201d.<\/p>\n Patagonia has requested a nominal sum of $1 million in damages and seeks to prevent the activist from further infringing merchandise or obtaining federal \u201cPattie Gonia\u201d trademarks.\u00a0<\/p>\n Pattie Gonia is yet to respond to the lawsuit.\u00a0<\/p>\n The statement adds: \u201cFor these reasons Pattie Gonia\u2019s use of a near-copy of our name commercially \u2013 including as a brand for environmental advocacy \u2013 and her trademark application seeking to obtain the exclusive right to use that name going forward, pose long-term threats to Patagonia\u2019s brand and our activism.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n At the end of last year, Pattie Gonia, who was the talk of November\u2019s Out100 Gala after appearing dressed in a 66ft-long trans flag<\/a>,\u00a0raised more than $1.1 million <\/a>for environmental non-profits after taking on a 100-mile trek in full drag.<\/p>\n Share your thoughts!\u00a0Let us know in the comments below, and remember to keep the conversation respectful.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The brand Patagonia has sued drag queen Pattie Gonia for trademark infringement.
