{"id":113432,"date":"2026-01-27T00:26:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-27T00:26:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/113432\/"},"modified":"2026-01-27T00:26:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-27T00:26:07","slug":"mayor-mamdani-declares-remote-learning-day-a-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/113432\/","title":{"rendered":"Mayor Mamdani declares remote learning day a success"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Public school buildings and schoolyards were eerily quiet Monday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But while schools were closed, that didn\u2019t mean students didn\u2019t have class.<\/p>\n<p>Altogether, about 375,000 students and parents logged in virtually on the <a href=\"https:\/\/ny1.com\/nyc\/all-boroughs\/education\/2026\/01\/25\/new-york-city-public-schools-remote\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">first day of remote learning<\/a> in two years, according to city officials. That was close to 80% of those expected to attend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThings have gone very well this morning,\u201d Schools Chancellor Kamar Samuels said at a morning briefing. \u201cIt was a smooth start to the day. Students were able to log into their virtual classroom quickly and get right into their school day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What You Need To Know<\/p>\n<p>City officials said about 375,000 students logged in to remote learning, close to 80% of those with virtual classes<br \/>\n<br \/>Some families reported glitches logging into Google Classroom, but the Department of Education said it worked closely with Google and eventually resolved any issues<br \/>\n<br \/>In-person classes are set to resume Tuesday<\/p>\n<p>City officials tried it out themselves, with Mayor Zohran Mamdani dropping in on a virtual fifth-grade class at PS 182, The Bilingual Bicultural School in Manhattan, reading to students from \u201cThe Snowy Day\u201d by Ezra Jack Keats.<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani said he decided against a traditional snow day because there\u2019s little flexibility to add makeup days at the end of the school year, given the high number of school holidays.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did visit a classroom this morning remotely, alongside the chancellor, and reiterated my offer to students that they could pelt me in the face with a snowball,\u201d he said. \u201cThey were very excited about that and asked for a time and place.
