LONG ISLAND CITY, Queens (PIX11) \u2014 With temperatures expected to stay cold, snow and ice aren\u2019t going anywhere anytime soon, becoming part of the daily routine for New Yorkers across the city.<\/p>\n
In Queens, commuters say the lingering buildup is making an already challenging commute even harder.<\/p>\n
More Local News <\/a><\/p>\n \u201cWhen it\u2019s piled up like this, it really makes our lives difficult,\u201d said Marcia Evangelista, a commuter navigating snow-covered sidewalks and bus stops.<\/p>\n Evangelista says staying home isn\u2019t an option. \u201cI\u2019m a nurse, it\u2019s our calling and our work, we cannot really escape,\u201d she said. \u201cSo, we need to go to work, whatever it takes. I\u2019m just taking the buses and trains, and it\u2019s really difficult to walk.\u201d<\/p>\n Across the borough, neighbors were also working overtime to dig out from the storm. In Astoria, piles of snow and ice covered streets, some nearly unrecognizable after the neighborhood saw as much as 10 inches of snow on Sunday.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ve been here since one o\u2019clock this afternoon,\u201d said Queens resident David Sheppard, as he shoveled out two cars. \u201cAfter this turns into ice, you\u2019re not gonna be able to do anything.\u201d<\/p>\n Bus stops remain another major concern, with snowbanks forcing riders to wait in the street or navigate icy sidewalks. \u201cIt\u2019s the projects, it\u2019s Long Island City, there\u2019s a lot of commuting going from here, trying to get up to the Bronx, to Manhattan,\u201d said Frankie, a Queens resident.<\/p>\n
