Greensboro, N.C., Jan. 27, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Volvo Trucks North America announced that three zero-tailpipe-emission Volvo VNR Electric trucks\u00a0will be delivered\u00a0in 2026\u00a0to City Harvest, New York City\u2019s\u00a0largest food rescue organization, as part of the\u00a0Bronx is\u00a0Breathing project. Supported by a $10 million award from the New York Clean Transportation Prizes program, the initiative is designed to reduce noise and emissions for South Bronx neighborhoods bordering one of the nation\u2019s busiest freight corridors.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Each Volvo VNR Electric truck will\u00a0be\u00a0equipped with battery-electric transport refrigeration units, enabling true zero-tailpipe emissions during food rescue and delivery operations across\u00a0all five New York City\u00a0boroughs. City Harvest will initially charge the vehicles at a new charging installation being deployed at the Fulton Fish Market Cooperative\u00a0in\u00a0the Hunts Point Food Distribution Center\u00a0in the Bronx. In the coming years, charging operations will shift to a freight-focused public charging hub\u00a0being\u00a0developed by MN8 Energy\u00a0in\u00a0the Hunts Point Food Distribution Center, which will feature 32 DC fast chargers, including stalls for heavy-duty Class 8 trucks\u00a0plus 10 Level-2 chargers, when it becomes operational in 2029.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Volvo VNR Electric truck\u00a0is\u00a0purpose-built for urban routes where trucks\u00a0operate\u00a0near\u00a0homes, schools, and businesses. With zero-tailpipe emissions,\u00a0the VNR\u00a0Electric helps improve local air quality in densely populated communities\u00a0long\u00a0impacted\u00a0by transportation-related pollution. Its quieter\u00a0operation also reduces noise during early-morning or late-night deliveries, creating a more comfortable environment for drivers and city residents.\u00a0<\/p>\n

New York State Energy Research\u00a0and\u00a0Development Authority\u00a0(NYSERDA)\u00a0Senior Vice President of Integrated Energy Solutions David Sandbank said, \u201cNYSERDA\u2019s support of the Bronx is Breathing project will help City Harvest transition from diesel to zero-emission delivery trucks, reducing noise and improving air quality for South Bronx residents. These investments in electric trucks and charging infrastructure support cleaner freight operations in Hunts Point and strengthen the local economy.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Electric trucks driving cleaner air and real community benefits\u00a0<\/p>\n

Bronx is Breathing<\/a>\u00a0demonstrates\u00a0scalable commercial-vehicle electrification strategies in the Hunts Point peninsula, which\u00a0is home to the nation\u2019s largest wholesale food hub and more than 15,000 truck trips each workday.\u00a0Together, the electric truck deployment and public heavy-duty charging hub will reduce diesel emissions in South Bronx neighborhoods with some of the nation\u2019s highest asthma hospitalization rates and\u00a0demonstrate\u00a0a model that can be replicated in other underserved freight corridors.\u00a0<\/p>\n

City Harvest\u2019s trucks are part of a broader\u00a0eight-vehicle Volvo Group deployment funded through the project,\u00a0supporting\u00a0food distribution, waste operations, and local deliveries in Hunts Point.\u00a0City Harvest rescues and delivers\u202fover\u00a086\u00a0million pounds\u202fof food annually in New York City.\u00a0This amounts to approximately\u00a0250,000 pounds\u00a0of food every day.\u00a0This is made possible through their\u00a0fleet of trucks that picks up excess food\u00a0that would otherwise go to waste\u00a0from grocers, farms, manufacturers, and\u00a0restaurants and delivers it to food pantries, soup kitchens, and other community programs across the five boroughs.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n

All Volvo VNR Electric trucks deployed through the project will be supported by Milea Truck Sales and Leasing, which\u00a0was the first dealership on the East Coast to achieve\u00a0the\u00a0Volvo Trucks Certified EV\u00a0Dealership\u00a0status.\u00a0Headquartered in the Bronx,\u00a0the family-owned dealership\u00a0has invested in dedicated EV service bays, charging infrastructure, and stocked parts to ensure\u00a0maximum\u00a0uptime. The dealership\u2019s sales and service teams completed rigorous training to support\u00a0local fleets transitioning to battery-electric trucks.\u00a0<\/p>\n
