During a reception to mark Holocaust Memorial Day at Buckingham Palace today, Queen Camilla wore a meaningful brooch<\/a>: Queen Victoria\u2019s Hesse Diamond Jubilee Brooch. It was just her second time wearing the historic jewel as queen; the first was at Queen Elizabeth\u2019s funeral in September 2022<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In 1897, the brooch, made by Faberg\u00e9, was given to Queen Victoria by four of her grandchildren upon the occasion of her diamond jubilee. The brooch features an open pendant heart and features three blue sapphires. The Cyrillic word for sixty, to mark the Diamond Jubilee, is depicted in diamonds. It was gifted to her by several of her grandchildren, who were children of Princess Alice, the Grand Duchess of Hesse and by Rhine. (Hence why it is called the \u201cHesse\u201d Diamond Jubilee brooch.)<\/p>\n

While it went on display at the Imperial Institute of London in 1897, afterwards, it \u201cseems to half dropped out of public view,\u201d according to the Court Jeweller<\/a>. Queen Camilla first wore it in 2007 during a visit to the United States, when she was the Duchess of Cornwall. At that point, it hadn\u2019t been seen in public for over a century.<\/p>\n

She wore it a few more times throughout her time as Duchess of Cornwall, including in 2017:<\/p>\n

But its most significant appearance came at the state funeral of Queen Elizabeth, when she pinned it to her black dress for the somber day at Westminster Abbey.<\/p>\n

Holocaust Remembrance Day 2026, then, marks the first time she wore the brooch since Queen Elizabeth\u2019s funeral.<\/p>\n
