A notorious Brooklyn Hasidic pedophile nearly walked free<\/a> during a resentencing Tuesday \u2014 till he pretended to forget details of his crimes and the furious prosecutor reversed course and pushed for more time.<\/p>\n

Nechemya Weberman ended up with a sentence slashed down from 103 years to 18 years, although with time served, that amounts to just five years left on the clock for the pedo \u2014 and with good behavior, he could be out by 2028.<\/p>\n

\u201cMr. Weberman\u2019s outrageous behavior in court today personified why he remains a danger to society,\u201d said Sarena Townsend, the lawyer for the sicko\u2019s then-12-year-old female victim.<\/p>\n

\u201cHis repeated denials and refusal to face his actions proved that his assurances of rehabilitation and remorse were lies.\u201d<\/p>\n

Weberman, a former counselor at a Williamsburg yeshiva now in his 60s, appeared vivacious, smiling and jovial on video feed from the maximum-security Shawangunk Prison in upstate New York \u2014 despite his supporters painting an image of a feeble man at death\u2019s door.<\/p>\n

He had been convicted<\/a> on 59 counts and originally sentenced to 103 years in prison 13 years ago for repeatedly sexually abusing victim Rivky Deutsch for three years.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Brooklyn District Attorney\u2019s Office \u2014 under pressure from some members of the convict\u2019s religious community for years \u2014 was prepared to effectively push to free the convicted sicko, having sought the resentencing on the grounds his 103-year stint was excessive and that he had already served enough time.<\/p>\n

But Brooklyn Assistant District Attorney Joseph Alexis changed course mid-hearing when Weberman claimed to forget the gory details of his misdeeds.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The pedophile attested to his remorse and apologized, reading from a statement, claiming he had spent years \u201cin denial\u2019\u2019 and was \u201ca changed man.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Judge Matthew D\u2019Emic became noticeably irritated Tuesday when Weberman claimed to not remember the details of his sexual abuse. AP<\/p>\n

But Alexis demanded he go further and specifically attest to his criminal acts.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Weberman repeatedly responded \u201cI don\u2019t remember\u201d when asked graphic questions about his crimes, including if he recalled forcing his pre-teen victim to perform oral sex.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s troubling to me is that Mr. Weberman can\u2019t remember,\u201d Alexis said \u201cThe victim can never forget.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cQuite frankly if the defendant was forthcoming, I was authorized to offer 15 years,\u201d Alexis said, a move that would have potentially seen Weberman walk free.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I am going to pivot away from that,\u201d the ADA said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

A quiet and reserved Deutsch read her own statement to the judge, recalling, \u201cHis smug smile hurt the most.<\/p>\n

\u201c[The DA] walked in ready to let [Weberman] walk out,\u201d said Asher Lovy, director of the Orthodox Jewish victims group Za\u2019akah.\u00a0 Matthew McDermott<\/p>\n

\u201cIt would be tragic if in five years from now, someone else is standing here describing his own story similar to mine, your Honor. You have the ability to prevent that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Judge Matthew D\u2019Emic\u2019s new sentence gives Weberman five more years to recall his misdeeds, but with good behavior, he could be out in half the time.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cA modified sentence of 18 years with 10 years supervision remains a meaningful penalty,\u201d the judge said.
Weberman, who has fought his conviction and sentence for years, could still further appeal the new ruling.<\/p>\n

Sexual abuse advocates said the new sentence sends a \u201cdangerous\u201d message to survivors in the Hasidic community.<\/p>\n
