{"id":114765,"date":"2026-01-28T06:04:09","date_gmt":"2026-01-28T06:04:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/114765\/"},"modified":"2026-01-28T06:04:09","modified_gmt":"2026-01-28T06:04:09","slug":"holocaust-survivors-share-their-stories-at-nyc-remembrance-event","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/114765\/","title":{"rendered":"Holocaust survivors share their stories at NYC remembrance event"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">CHELSEA, Manhattan (PIX11) \u2014 The Center for Jewish History held a special event where two Holocaust survivors shared their stories on International Holocaust Remembrance Day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIt is the International holocaust Remembrance Day, and it was also simultaneous with the liberation of the horrible concentration camps in Auschwitz,\u201d Gabriella Major, who was just two years old when her family faced unimaginable loss, said Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/pix11.com\/news\/local-news\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:More Local News;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\"> More Local News <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cMembers of my extended family, including my grandparents, were murdered,\u201d adding, \u201cthe Germans were losing the war and they had to quickly annihilate the Jews in Hungary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Toby Levy was eight years old, living in Ukraine, when the Holocaust upended her childhood.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWhen my father comes and tells my mom that the Germans are going to relocate us to Levov, my father says I don\u2019t believe them, they are going to shoot us outside of the city, we are going into hiding,\u201d Levy said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Levy and her family hid for two years to survive during that time; her father asked her to make a promise. \u201cIf we make it, you go to school and you would have to tell the world, I fulfilled his wishes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/pix11.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:More: Latest News from Around the Tri-State;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\"> More: Latest News from Around the Tri-State <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Both women now dedicate their lives to educating younger generations about the Holocaust and its lasting lessons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWhen I speak to children, I say Jews alone cannot solve the problems I need you all to help us,\u201d said Levy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">They warn that remembering history is essential, especially as hate resurfaces. \u201cUnfortunately, history is repeating itself; one would have never thought that 81 years later we are at this point,\u201d added Major.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The Anne Frank exhibition is currently on display at the Center for Jewish History through Feb. 1.
