A man has been arrested after a car repeatedly hit an ultra-Orthodox synagogue<\/a> in New York City.<\/p>\n

The driver appeared to hit a door of a building in the Chabad Lubavitch World Headquarters in Brooklyn before reversing and striking it several more times.<\/p>\n

New York police commissioner Jessica Tisch said it was too early to speculate on the driver\u2019s motives, but that the incident was being investigated as a potential hate crime.<\/a><\/p>\n

There were no injuries reported. The driver of the car was arrested, and no explosives were found by the bomb squad that investigated the car<\/a>, Tisch added.<\/p>\n

Video footage shared online showed a car displaying New Jersey licence plates appearing to move forward and backward on an icy driveway, ramming the building\u2019s basement-level doors.<\/p>\n

A spokesperson for the synagogue said that the driver was arrested \u2018almost immediately\u2019 (@ChabadLubavitch)<\/p>\n

The driver of the car then got out of his vehicle and shouted to bystanders that \u201cit slipped\u201d, before speaking to the police about trying to park.<\/p>\n

The mayor of New York City, Zohran Mamdani, said the arrested man \u201cintentionally, and repeatedly, crashed his car into the building\u201d.<\/p>\n

Mamdani paid a visit to the synagogue afterwards and described the incident as \u201chorrifying\u201d and \u201cdeeply alarming\u201d in a social media post.<\/p>\n

The synagogue is home to Chabad followers, also known as Lubavitchers, who belong to the ultra-Orthodox Hasidic school of Judaism<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Motti Seligson, the Chabad Lubavitch spokesperson, told the Times: \u201cEarlier tonight, a car crashed into a side entrance at Chabad HQ at 770 Eastern Parkway, the building encompasses one of the most important synagogues in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added that the driver was arrested \u201calmost immediately\u201d but that some of the synagogue\u2019s doors were damaged in the incident.<\/p>\n

Thousands of people visit The Chabad Lubavitch headquarters and synagogue in Brooklyn\u2019s Crown Heights neighbourhood every year, and the building has had an almost-constant police presence for years.<\/p>\n

Hate crimes against Jewish communities<\/a> in the US have risen in recent years since the Israel-Gaza conflict.<\/p>\n
