There\u2019s\u00a0plenty of excitement in the voices of Hahnville\u2019s Amani Williams and Destrehan\u2019s\u00a0Ka\u2019Mi\u00a0Johnson when they recount the nights they were named Homecoming Queen of their respective schools \u2013 each, in fact, seemed even happier for the other than their own crowning night.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

It\u2019s\u00a0something that comes natural for the longtime best friends \u2013 each was in the crowd cheering when the other was crowned.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI was overly happy for her,\u201d said Williams with a smile. \u201cI was cheering, just so happy to see my friend get that honor.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Added Johnson, \u201cWe always want to see each other do well. I was\u00a0really happy.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

But on Friday night, it was Homecoming Queen vs. Homecoming Queen in a completely different element \u2013 the two athletes were on the basketball court squaring off as Hahnville hosted Destrehan in the always heated rivalry battle.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

While it was the first time the girls would\u00a0matchup\u00a0since earning their crowns, it was nothing new in another regard.\u00a0They\u2019ve\u00a0been friends since they were\u00a0very young, playing as teammates since the age of five and then as opponents since they were seven.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Now, both in their senior year,\u00a0its\u00a0the final year to face off as part of the Battle on the River rivalry.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been like this for four years,\u201d said Johnson of the rivalry. \u201cEveryone at school,\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0hearing \u2018you\u2019ve\u00a0gotta\u00a0win, y\u2019all\u00a0gotta\u00a0beat them.\u2019 People come out to the games to support us and\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0a lot of fun.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

On this night, it was a victory for Johnson and her Destrehan teammates \u2013 one of many this season for a team ranked seventh statewide in their classification.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

But for both students,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0already been a special senior year to share together.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cTo see two best friends (named Homecoming Queen)?\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0pretty cool,\u201d said Williams. \u201cWe put the work in, we make good grades and we try to do everything the right way.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
