NEW YORK (WABC) — A brutal stretch of Arctic cold continues across New York City and the Tri-State, with the region in a prolonged deep freeze expected to last through the weekend and beyond.<\/p>\n

Temperatures remain well below freezing, with wind chills dropping as low as 20 below zero overnight, prompting cold weather advisories.<\/p>\n

An AccuWeather Alert is in effect through Saturday for dangerously cold wind chills.<\/p>\n

Friday morning wind chills will feel like five below in New York City, with even colder readings north and west. Frostbite can occur in as little as 15 to 30 minutes. Despite abundant sunshine, daytime highs will struggle to reach the upper teens.<\/p>\n

A weekend storm is expected to largely miss the area, bringing only scattered snow showers for most. The main impact is possible on the eastern end of Long Island, where 1 to 3 inches of snow, strong winds, rough surf, and minor coastal flooding are possible.<\/p>\n
