The NYPD said a 22-year-old man with a history of mental issues was being operated on for non-life-threatening injuries Monday afternoon after being shot as he advanced on police officers with a large kitchen knife in a private home in the 107th Precinct.<\/p>\n
Multiple reports state that the home was on Parsons Boulevard between 84th Drive and 85th Avenue in Briarwood, though police did not comment on the exact location at a 2 p.m. press conference.<\/p>\n
Assistant Chief Christopher McIntosh, commanding officer of Patrol Borough Queens South, briefed the media in a press conference at the 107th Precinct station house in Fresh Meadows, along with Capt. Michael Black-Larkins, commander of the 107th, and Capt. Anthony Scapicio of the Force Investigation Division.<\/p>\n
McIntosh said the officers\u2019 body camera footage has been reviewed and that the findings he discussed are preliminary and subject to change pending a full investigation.<\/p>\n
\u201cAt approximately 10:25 this morning, a family member called 911 to report that a 22-year-old male with a history of mental issues was throwing glass against a wall,\u201d McIntosh said. \u201cWhen officers arrived at the residence they were met by the 911 caller, who let them in.\u201d<\/p>\n
McIntosh said the man was in the kitchen when the officers arrived and that upon seeing them he allegedly grabbed the knife and began advancing toward the cops.<\/p>\n
\u201cA family member attempted to restrain the male, but was unsuccessful, and he continued to advance toward the officers,\u201d the chief said, adding that the officers attempted to de-escalate the situation and that the man ignored repeated warnings to put the knife down.<\/p>\n
McIntosh said the officers retreated and attempted to isolate the man by closing a glass door that separates the living room and kitchen, all while repeating their warnings to drop the knife.<\/p>\n
McIntosh said officers fired after the man pushed his way through the door and continued to advance on them with the knife, which was recovered.<\/p>\n
He said the officers immediately summoned EMS and administered first aid.<\/p>\n
\u201cEMS removed the individual to Jamaica Hospital, where he is currently in surgery with non-life-threatening injuries,\u201d McIntosh said. The officers were brought to another area hospital for evaluation.<\/p>\n
McIntosh declined to comment on the number of shots fired and other details with the investigation in its very early stages.<\/p>\n
