No school. No shopping. Stop funding ICE.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MSUZCQCJOFBIXE3HY3H6AU7UXQ\">Organizers are asking participants to stay home from work or school and avoid making purchases on Jan. 30. The protest is a response to what organizers describe as the brutal killings of several individuals by ICE and other U.S. Department of Homeland Security agents over the past month, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.syracuse.com\/opinion\/2026\/01\/i-didnt-know-alex-pretti-but-i-knew-dedicated-va-nurses-like-him-your-letters.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.syracuse.com\/opinion\/2026\/01\/i-didnt-know-alex-pretti-but-i-knew-dedicated-va-nurses-like-him-your-letters.html\">Alex Pretti<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.syracuse.com\/us-news\/2026\/01\/who-was-renee-macklin-good-minneapolis-woman-shot-by-ice-was-a-mother-poet.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.syracuse.com\/us-news\/2026\/01\/who-was-renee-macklin-good-minneapolis-woman-shot-by-ice-was-a-mother-poet.html\">Renee Good<\/a> (in Minneapolis, MN); Silverio Villegas Gonz\u00e1lez (Franklin Park, IL), and Keith Porter Jr. (Los Angeles, CA).<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TGWD2SMT45HWVEU6ZWVUW2OVZA\">Many businesses have announced on social media that they will be participating in the shutdown and will not be opening on Friday. <\/p>\n<p>Upstate NY businesses that will be closed on Friday, Jan. 30:<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5ZJAN24YV5FJ5I6YOTDVWEYBI4\">Other businesses have announced they will remain open this Friday, but will pledge a portion of their sales to anti-ICE initiatives. Among them is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DUGmh9gj1TD\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DUGmh9gj1TD\/?hl=en\">Balsalm Bagels<\/a> (Rochester), which will donate 10% of its proceeds to the Legal Aid Society of Rochester\u2019s Immigration Unit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3TWZ6ADFEFGZTHBRMFD3EE3JLA\">Several Upstate NY organizations have also officially endorsed the national shutdown. They include: Syracuse Peace Council, Rochester\u2019s Sexual and Reproductive Task Force, Peace Action New York State, The Finger Lakes Peoples Union, and the Cattaraugus-Allegany Liberation Collective.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"Q5RLQCDS5NGSVGKHMMPUGTKZ2Q\">Friday\u2019s shutdown will be followed by street protests scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 31.
