Fox News\u2019 Martha MacCallum was taken aback when House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) pleaded ignorance on Thursday about a mass arrest<\/a> of anti-ICE protesters in New York City.<\/p>\n

The two debated the potential for a partial government shutdown over funding for the Department of Homeland Security during Thursday\u2019s episode of The Story with Martha MacCallum, when the host brought up anti-ICE protests in a neighboring district.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn New York, your home state, the other night there was a protest in a hotel in Manhattan, and the New York Police Department went in and they said either \u2014 because I want to point out that the Trump administration, they\u2019re saying you cannot put yourself in between a law enforcement operation,\u201d MacCallum said. \u201cYou can certainly protest but you can\u2019t put yourself in between a law enforcement operation.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, there were 65 New Yorkers arrested by the New York City Police Department and Mayor [Zohran] Mamdani did not protest this at all. Do you support that action by the New York City police, and why didn\u2019t we see that in Minnesota? Would that not have been a good idea?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n

Jeffries answered, \u201cI\u2019m unfamiliar with that particular incident,\u201d to which McCallum reacted with, \u201cHmm.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m happy to look into it and come back on your show and comment on it, but what I will say is that the American people \u2014 hundreds of millions of folks \u2014 saw a cold-blooded killing of Alex Pretti. He was called by the Trump administration \u2018a would-be assassin\u2019 and \u2018domestic terrorist.\u2019 No. That was a malignant lie,\u201d said Jeffries<\/p>\n

As Jeffries went on about Pretti\u2019s occupation as an ICU nurse, MacCallum spoke over him, saying, \u201cWell, the president has already attempted to remedy what you are talking about.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI hope so, but it remains to be seen,\u201d Jeffries snapped back.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll right, Leader Jeffries,\u201d McCallum began, \u201cI\u2019m surprised you haven\u2019t heard about that arrest of 65 people in New York. You represent the eighth district in New York. You hadn\u2019t heard that 65 protesters were arrested in New York City?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you surprised that I\u2019m here in Washington working to avert a government shutdown<\/a>, and to make sure that ICE conducts itself like any other law enforcement agency in the country?\u201d retorted Jeffries.<\/p>\n
