{"id":117250,"date":"2026-01-30T11:15:20","date_gmt":"2026-01-30T11:15:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/117250\/"},"modified":"2026-01-30T11:15:20","modified_gmt":"2026-01-30T11:15:20","slug":"a-beloved-staten-island-community-activist-in-fight-for-life-needs-organ-donation-within-months","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/117250\/","title":{"rendered":"A beloved Staten Island community activist in fight for life, needs organ donation within months"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4KRISOQ3PBEURIJDA7XZA4CDE4\">STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 Community advocate Tomas Cruz has a genetic liver disease and was recently diagnosed with a tumor that\u2019s located between two main arteries. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"66KTYFPVIRDIHFTURGH2OYJMMQ\">It\u2019s known as non-alcoholic fatty liver cirrhosis, a severe, late stage disease called MASLD (Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease) and MASH (metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis), where ongoing inflammation causes extensive, permanent scarring (fibrosis) that replaces healthy liver tissue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WSORW2VQRBHSVKE6BU7V75BGFE\">As a result Cruz\u2019s liver function is impaired, potentially leading to liver failure and cancer. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PAUNFTI2YJFLPN27DCQRKQJUAE\">At this time the West Brightonite is in dire need of a highly specialized surgical procedure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZBFTUR23Q5DWPOPGR3PIRU54S4\">An urgent search for a living donor has been implemented.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"U7LK75NCDBAQDC5SFEQV3TCTW4\">Cruz is being treated by Dr. Russell Rosenblatt, an assistant professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Weill Cornell Medicine in Manhattan, who specializes in management of patients with liver diseases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"54UYPUJEG5GGXBTWJUGMTOYNEY\">Dr. Rosenblatt is also the medical director of Living Donor Liver Transplantation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ECLEXQI6VBHXRPDJ33BAE75EG4\">In addition, the transplant team at NewYork-Presbyterian (NYP) encouraged the Cruz family to utilize social media to find a living donor, with a goal of completing the transplant within a three-month time frame.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ETVKVLZ2J5G2ZL76GETP3SHQXQ\">Family members are actively seeking a donor to help save his life..<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Toms\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/O5JDFMU7WZB3VE3HKNNFLUC5J4.JPG\"  \/>Tomas Cruz (Courtesy\/family photo)Staten Island Advance<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WWMOPE4OIRFIDG56MEHIOYDTKU\">The liver\u2019s unique ability to regenerate enables living donor transplantation, where a healthy person can donate up to 70 percent of their liver to someone with end-stage disease. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"P46MCUZE7VHWZB6U356MSES5RM\">Following surgery, both the donor\u2019s remaining liver and the transplanted portion grow back to full, functional size within two-too three months. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LZ3IQMIOQNH27LVEWYC4742T5E\">The process allows for lifesaving, elective procedures with improved outcomes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IRW4O3DKSZEQJDMA46D4EPFCQA\">Information on how to become a living donor for Cruz is being directed through nyp.org\/livingdonorliver. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4UZF5XOXKJGLNDWGDXSJCRT7OA\">The transplant is needed within the next three months.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Tomas\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/OE2HTPEC7NDS7L3IUNSF2BDE5I.JPG\"  \/>Tomas and Zulma Cruz, far left and far right, and their children. She has been recognized numerous times for her active community work on Staten Island and beyond.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SQHI4CM62FEHTDOP446HWIEBHE\">\u201cWe can\u2019t do too much,\u201d she added. \u201cWe are begging people to become a potential donor. Tom\u2019s sister was faced with the same situation and a 26-year-old girl basically saved her life. Her cancer was found at a later stage, but Tom\u2019s situation is more dangerous right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"EJMBSHBATJH5HO2WVQVENRVQUE\">\u201cThe procedure isn\u2019t like it used to be. It\u2019s robotic. And if you are between 20 and 60 and haven\u2019t been diagnosed with diabetes or heart disease and have type O positive (O+) blood type, you are a prospect. We have been doing community work and spreading the word with friends and family members. Some people have registered and filled out an initial form.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VTH73D3CZZHR5BB7FFT3NXN37Q\">Tomas\u2019 son was the first one to be called. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"JLZZX5N4G5CVHBBGMSVU36TP4U\">However, the family is exercising caution inasmuch as his condition is genetic. So it\u2019s important that someone outside the family comes forward.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RZJLQVPMG5FHRPS6TDVMDD2CRY\">There are 15,000 patients waiting for a liver donor with 9,000 in New York City.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GQ7MP44UCBFTJJNZSGIMD2473A\">\u201cWe are posting on Instagram and Facebook and also on Tik Tok, and other social media,\u201d said Zulma, who is director of Food Advocacy at Project Hospitality.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HZ6AXJRVAFCNLH3W4ZWVZAEY5E\">The Cruz family and their friends have mobilized across Staten Island, posting flyers, organizing information sessions, and sharing their story online to find a match. But they need help spreading the word \u2014 fast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"EXMZKTY255HGBCU437BFZQGJDA\">\u201cEveryone feels our desperation. (Staten Island Advance\/Bill Lyons) Staff-Shot<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TK5GJPNQD5HMVNEHDA2LUOUEQI\">Longtime West Brighton residents, who now call Scotch Plains home, Zulma and Tomas Cruz both work full time on Staten Island and are involved in a number of organizations on the local level.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"34BMRQZXMZCMRFKRDQW7EUMCWE\">Cruz has mentored college students his whole life and has even assisted them financially during the application process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"X3ROXZLFFRHKTMH2ERZ5R5Q6JE\">His brother Francisco Cruz was lost in the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OTI7TV6Y75F2JFG6D2QM2DCFFM\">Tomas and Zulma Cruz have been married for nearly 43 years, and are the parents of three children, two grandchildren. and two grandchildren. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"27QTWWQ23BG3FCOW7RESINBR4I\">The couple enjoys traveling to Europe and to Puerto Rico.
