{"id":117356,"date":"2026-01-30T13:16:26","date_gmt":"2026-01-30T13:16:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/117356\/"},"modified":"2026-01-30T13:16:26","modified_gmt":"2026-01-30T13:16:26","slug":"when-flames-reshaped-a-congregation-the-1959-loss-of-staten-islands-gans-mansion-then-and-now","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/117356\/","title":{"rendered":"When flames reshaped a congregation: The 1959 loss of Staten Island\u2019s Gans Mansion | Then and Now"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MFELSSSIRRAWXHNV5XV5EKPI2Q\">STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 The Gans Mansion at 800 Victory Blvd. in Silver Lake suffered a devastating fire in 1959, destroying the building and forcing the Island\u2019s first Reform congregation to relocate and rebuild. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GXOVMCZBHNF5TMJ7M3DA2YDFHE\">Temple Israel had purchased the mansion on Nov. 20, 1950, making it the congregation\u2019s first permanent home.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Gans Mansion\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/RKOXJLC7HJHW7AAVQI4IIRAN4E.JPG\"  \/>The Gans Mansion was located at 800 Victory Blvd. on Staten Island, which served as the first permanent home for Temple Israel, the Island&#8217;s first Reform Congregation, starting in 1950.(Photo Courtesy NYC Municipal Archives)<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6JVRJJOVWRG6XJL26V2KC4L5E4\">The blaze struck on May 19, 1959, gutting the historic building. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"EIWP3E553NDXHK3VROICSV5RLE\">Despite the destruction, the Torah scrolls and pulpit Bible were saved from the flames. The congregation had held its first service at the mansion on June 23, 1951, and worshipped there for eight years before the fire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SDTDKNN3V5G4DJ43U4225MVONY\">Following the blaze, a 150-unit apartment building was constructed at the 800 Victory Blvd. location in 1961. Temple Israel moved forward with plans for a new permanent home at 315 Forest Ave. in Randall Manor.
