A 45-year-old man is stable and hospitalized after being shot in the Bedford Park section of The Bronx on Thursday, Jan. 29, police said.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
An NYPD spokesperson said the NYPD received a call at 7.21 p.m. of a shooting and that one person was shot in the lower abdomen and transported to St. Barnabas Hospital in Belmont. Police later said the man was shot four times in the back, abdomen and in both arms.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s no perpetrator description,\u201d a police spokesperson said. \u201cOur victim is not being cooperative right now.\u201d<\/p>\n
Police had cordoned off the crime scene around Bedford Convenience Store, located at Bedford Park Blvd and Villa\u00a0 Avenue, and blood stains were seen just inside the door of the business on Thursday evening.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Norwood News spoke to several business owners \/ employees in the neighborhood, but nobody saw the shooting and most said they were busy at the time it occurred.<\/p>\n We spoke to two employees who work in the area about security generally. Speaking in Spanish, one said, \u201cWe worry that these types of things happen in the neighborhood, because for about one year and a bit, nothing like this has happened.\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s been a fairly safe area but lately, the new buildings on Villa Avenue that have gone up has brought this type of people.\u201d We asked what he meant exactly.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n He said it had become more dangerous. We asked if the people he was referring to had mental health issues to his knowledge. He said, \u201cI imagine, but I don\u2019t know. They seem normal.\u201d We asked if they were unemployed and he said, \u201cyes.\u201d<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n A married, middle-aged couple who own a business on the block and who declined to be identified, said of security in the area that they used to see more police both on foot and in vehicles patrolling the area in the years prior to the pandemic.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n The woman said at that time they would see police coming into their store between two and six times a day, as customers but that this is no longer the case. \u201cSo you can tell how many times they pass by,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n It feels more comfortable to see police around you. If anything happens, it\u2019s easy to call\u201d she said, adding that once in the past, prior to the pandemic, her store was robbed and the police were across the street. Now, it\u2019s a little bit scary. You call the police, it takes like from one to two hours they come here.\u201d She said she believes thieves know this and have said to her as they steal items from her store, \u201cIf I don\u2019t pay, what are you going to do? Call the police.\u201d<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n She said they know they can run away before the police arrive. Asked if they are armed, she said, \u201cNo, regular people. I never see armed people stealing here.\u201d Asked what type of items they are stealing and if it\u2019s food, perhaps, due to hunger, she said it\u2019s never food but usually young people stealing drinks like Monster or Red Bull or beer.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Asked how many, she said sometimes it could be 12 cans because they hide them throughout their body and then re-sell them. \u201cThey don\u2019t steal bread or anything to eat,\u201d she said. Video by S\u00edle Moloney\u00a0<\/p>\n He said once his wife ran after a thief with a six-pack of beer, and caught him without help from the police. Asked if she had been scared, he smiled and said she was brave. His wife said she hoped the gunshot victim would recover well.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Asked if they had witnessed fighting among young people in the area, the woman said, \u201cVery rarely.\u201d She said since July 2025, they haven\u2019t seen much fighting but during the pandemic, she witnessed a lot of it. She added that they used to close around midnight but now they\u2019re closing earlier at around 8.30 or 9 p.m.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Speaking in Spanish, another worker in a nearby restaurant said she had seen, last summer, a couple physically fighting in the Bedford Convenience Store, where the shooting took place, and that it made her feel on edge.
