Nydia Vel\u00e1zquez on Friday, the Daily News has learned.<\/p>\n<p>Reynoso, currently the Brooklyn borough president, is matched up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2026\/01\/09\/mamdani-endorsement-of-claire-valdez-for-congress-puts-him-at-odds-with-other-progressives\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">against Claire Valdez<\/a>, an assemblymember and Democratic Socialists of America member, in race for the <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/New_York%27s_7th_Congressional_District\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">7th Congressional District<\/a>. which includes some of the most left-leaning neighborhoods in North Brooklyn and Queens.<\/p>\n<p>The primary has made a growing schism <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michaellange.nyc\/p\/the-socialists-vs-the-progressives\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">between progressives and democratic socialists<\/a> in New York City apparent.<\/p>\n<p>The candidates share stances against the Trump administration, ICE and Israel\u2019s actions in Gaza, and they both have labor backgrounds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom one Borough President to another, Antonio is the man for the job,\u201d Richards, who stands as a more moderate Democrat, said in a statement. \u201cHis work in the City Council and as Brooklyn BP proves he knows how to stand up to power in the name of supporting working people, even when it isn\u2019t politically convenient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2026\/01\/15\/rep-nydia-velazquez-endorses-antonio-reynoso\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vel\u00e1zquez<\/a>, who announced her retirement late last year, counts Reynoso as a protege. She endorsed him earlier in January, citing his\u00a0upbringing in South Williamsburg and grounding \u201cin lived experience.\u201d The candidate\u2019s also collected the endorsement of other progressives including Public Advocate Jumaane Williams and City Council Members Sandy Nurse and Lincoln Restler,.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is an honor to have his endorsement as we fight to wrestle power from the billionaires and oligarchs and ensure that our government is for the people, by the people,\u201d Reynoso said of the endorsement.<\/p>\n<p>Valdez, for her part, has netted the support of Mayor Mamdani and the DSA.
